  • No Country gets best picture, best adapted screenplay from previous material and best director(s).

There Will Be Blood gets best actor. There will be controversy about the Academy passing up the movie for best adapted.

Michael Clayton will get best screenplay, upsetting those counting on Diablo Cody's dark horse favorite in Juno. In a sentimental vote, Julie Christie will get best actress for Away From Her, further angering the Juno supporters who feel Ellen Page should get it.
  • Last thing: as a knee-jerk mea culpa over "Fahrenheit 9/11", Michael Moore wins for "Sicko".
  • Malchus
Well, Moore pulled "9/11" out of competition because he thought it would get a Best Picture nom. What was he thinking?
  • Well, I'm thinking more about the booing he got while talking about the Iraq War, in relation to "F911", back in the days when the Dixie Chicks were still Satan's concubines and potato products tasted like freedom.

    God, we are dumb.
  • Malchus
I would be stoked if Michael Clayton won best screenplay. It's a tightly written movie and an excellent read. While I like Juno, I thought that there were aspects of it that screamed "my first screenplay!" Tony Gilroy wrote two of the best movies last year (including Bourne Ultimatum) and deserves recognition for his work.

Alas, I think Diablo mania will win out.
  • Call me cynical but I think the Academy is too uptight for Diablo Cody right now. Maybe by film 3 or 5 it'll be different, but I can just see the tabloid headlines now: "Former Stripper Wins Oscar".

I just don't think the voters have opened up quite that much yet.
  • Well, I'll be swoggled. Former stripper wins Oscar.

I'm so glad I'm not a gambling addict.
  • I have but one Oscars prediction, which is this: I will be asleep before 9:30.
  • I'm not even watching. I'll get the news tomorrow morning.

Truth be told, I was secretly hoping the writers strike would hold until after Oscar, guaranteeing the most awkward, screwed-up and unintentionally hilarious broadcast ever, or at least shorter that usual.
  • Yom Kippur jokes kick ass!
  • WHarrisBullzEye
    Marion Cotillard?!?

Wow. And I thought Tilda Swinton was a shock.
  • JonCummings
I wasn't surprised by Cotillard at all--I was rooting for her. She was truly incredible in that movie.
  • Hal Holbrook was robbed!
  • JonCummings
Best moment of the night: no surprise, it was Glen & Marketa--especially when Jon Stewart invited Marketa back onstage to give her speech. They got the biggest hands of the night--three times.
  • Mark
It was cool that she was let back on stage. It 's annoying when people get cut off while trying to give an acceptance speech.
  • I won the Oscar pool at my party, with 13 right. Fortunately, getting lucky with categories like Best Documentary Short and Best Art Design counts just as much as Best Picture and Best Directing.

They need to continue the trend of handing out awards to foreigners - short speeches -> tolerable program length.
  • Bwahahahahahaha! Quote of the day! Thanks, Zack!
