Film Review: “Bruno”

Bruno posterSince I’m usually ready to give any movie a go (unless the name Uwe Boll is attached to direct), I figured I’d check out a film I wouldn’t normally be attracted to, and see how it holds up. I have to admit up front that I’ve never been a big fan of Sacha Baron Cohen’s comedy; I’ve never intentionally watched Da Ali G Show, nor did I get caught up in the cultural phenomenon that was Borat.

However, I have to say that Cohen’s newest flick, Bruno, is one hell of a funny film.

As he did in the aforementioned Borat, Cohen takes a fish out of water–in this case, fictional Austrian supermodel Bruno–and plops him in the middle of the U.S., where he tries to rise from his shame of blacklisting in the fashion industry back home, to become famous by any means necessary. One of the things going against Bruno is that he’s gay, and must find a way to fit in with “normal” society in order to achieve his much sought-after fame. The movie is not just a fairly clever take on how much one must compromise themselves to fit in with the standards of others, but also an exposé of the insipid prejudices lurking within all people, from every walk of life. Trust me: if you’re a prim and proper, old-time stodgy bear, this is definitely not the movie for you.

Film Review: “Public Enemies”

I’ve been a fan of director Michael Mann (Ali, The Last of the Mohicans) for some years now. One thing I’ve always been able to count on is that no matter what project he’s filming, it will be a worthy consideration, a high-class work of art.

That is, until now.

Public Enemies, the latest Mann film, about the FBI hunt for legendary criminal John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) is a lengthy potboiler of a thriller, as most of Mann’s films tend to be. The problem here however, is that the pot boils overly long, the thrills are virtually nonexistent, and the story is sadly pedestrian, being one that we’ve seen many times before — including from Mann himself.

Set during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the film tracks the brilliant yet often brutal career of John Dillinger, a man who loves robbing banks as much for the public acclaim as for the money. Dillinger is known for his eccentric style, smooth appearance, being not unkind to his hostages (at one point even giving his own coat to a female captive to protect her from Chicago’s windy breezes), never taking money from customers of the banks he robs–only from the banks themselves–and his clean getaways. He doesn’t even shoot cops unless backed into a corner with no other option. He’s a true gentlemen’s criminal.

Assigned to capture Dillinger is one Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), a dedicated agent placed in charge of the FBI’s Chicago bureau by none other than J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) himself. Unfortunately, after a botched attempt to capture Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham), in which one of his own agents is killed, Purvis realizes his slick looking but inexperienced field agents aren’t quite up to the task, and he’s forced to recruit outside help to nab Nelson, some other gangsters, and of course public enemy #1, Dillinger.

DVD Review: “Catlow”

catlow1I’ve never been a true fan of the Western genre. As a matter of fact, I can count the number of Westerns I like enough to own on DVD and still have a finger or two left over to use. Having just watched Catlow, recently released on DVD, I’ve just lost one more counting finger.

Originally released in cinemas back in 1971, Catlow, starring the mighty Yul Brynner (The King and I, Westworld) in the title role, is one seriously fun, craftily written, expertly directed, rousingly good ol’ time.

Based on the novel by Louis L’Amour, the film begins with Marshall Ben Cowan (the late Richard Crenna) beset upon by Indians as he attempts to track down and arrest the outlaw cattle rustler Catlow. Cowan is injured by the Indians, but is unexpectedly rescued by Catlow and his men. The two share a special bond, having fought in the Civil War, and are friends of a type, neither man truly wanting to bring the other to any harm. This is proven straightaway, when in a discussion on how best to deal with an unconscious Ben’s wounded leg, Catlow’s right hand man Merridew (the late Jeff Corey) asks if Catlow will remove it at the hip, and Catlow sharply replies “I’ll take yours off at the neck!”

Although this film is played mainly as a comedy, director Sam Wanamaker (Death on the Nile, Private Benjamin) does an excellent job throughout of keeping the two characters’ friendship and loyalty on display no matter what situation they’re in. Even though each betrays the other several times, it’s never directly to either man’s enemy. Catlow saves Ben’s life from Indians and teams up to escape the clutches of a ruthless bounty hunter (Leonard Nimoy), while Ben does his best to ensure that although he must bring Catlow to justice, it’s an American prison he’ll settle into comfortably, rather than being left at the unkind mercies of the Federales, who are after him for attempting to steal their own wrongfully plundered gold. Film Review: “Up”

up-poster11The new Disney/Pixar collaboration, Up, has just opened to some of the best reviews the studio’s ever received. While it’s a very enjoyable film, I have to say it certainly isn’t among their best, in spite of the talent behind it.

As a child, Carl Fredricksen (at this point voiced by Jeremy Leary) is a huge fan of famed adventurer/explorer Charles Muntz (voiced by Christopher Plummer). Young Carl is a true devotee, keeping up with all of Muntz’ doings and is shocked to the core when one of his archaeological finds is disputed as a fraud. While Muntz sets off to clear his name, Carl happens to cross paths with Ellie (voiced by Elie Docter), who is just as much a fan of Muntz as Carl. The two become close, eventually falling in love, marrying and growing old together…all while keeping a coin jar in which they save whatever money they can to one day take a trip to Paradise Falls, the “land lost in time” for which Muntz set out. Carl makes the ultimate kids’ promise–crossing his heart–that he will one day take Ellie there, but before he can, she passes away. (more…)

Popdose Interview: The Man Behind Green Lantern’s (Fan-Made) Power Ring

green_lantern_symbol1If you’re a fan of superhero flicks, fan-made films or comics in general, then chances are you’ve seen the phenomenally well-crafted Green Lantern trailer that recently hit the web. In spite of its highly professional look, it was not made or sanctioned by anyone working at Warner Brothers — it’s a fan-made trailer, cobbled together with well-edited scenes from more than two dozen films, by Jaron Pitts.

Jaron is just a married guy living in Texas with his family, minding his own business…one who happens to be highly talented at putting together trailers that spark a nerve in the collective consciousness. His trailer for Green Lantern has many fans of the hero now convinced that his vision will surpass anything Warner Bros. can come up with for their real flick, which is currently in production. I reached out to Jaron recently to find out how in our world–or on Oa–he came up with such an amazing trailer, and here’s what he had to say…

Tell us about yourself. What do you do for a living, and what are your long term goals?

I’m 26 and live in Dallas, TX with my wife and two little girls. I am a multimedia director and worship leader for a church here in town. My long term goals are somewhat vague, but I would say that if I put them into words it might limit them. Who doesn’t dream to work in the movie industry? (more…)

DVD Review: “Wolverine and the X-Men”

wolverinecoverThe cover has Sentinels on it. The opening credits have Sentinels in them. The back cover seems to promise this will be a really cool, animated adaptation of the classic X-Men comic-book two-parter “Days of Future Past.” So where in the flying hell are the Sentinels and a war-ravaged future in the freakin’ movie?

Oh, right — they’re all at the end. For about ten seconds. Niiiiiiice.

Adult fans of Marvel’s mutant super-hero team the X-Men — and even smaller fans over the age of seven — might be seriously disappointed in the new Wolverine and the X-Men: Heroes Return Trilogy. The DVD comprises the first three episodes of the same-titled series running on Nicktoons, and is in no way a spin-off of the previous X-series that came before it. Wolverine and the X-Men starts off by jumping right into the story, figuring that pretty much everyone on the planet knows by now who the various X-Men are, courtesy of Bryan Singer.  We’re shown a typical training sequence with Nightcrawler, Kitty Pryde and Colossus in the Danger Room, before we find out that Wolverine is leaving the mansion for some alone time. On his way out, he says his goodbyes to Beast and Jean Grey, and is about to chat with Storm and Professor X, when suddenly the Professor and Jean–being the resident telepaths in the group–feel a profound psychic assault, and then a bright light solarizes the screen, taking us forward to one year later. Film Review: “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”

wolverine1This was supposed to be the dawn of the New Great Age of comic book adaptations. Marvel Studios brought us Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, and DC/Warner Bros. gave us The Dark Knight. Then, sadly, Lionsgate delivered the one-two sucker punches of The Punisher: War Zone and The Spirit.

Now, with the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it’s my sad job to officially welcome you back to the days when studios churned out crappy comic book movies.

Actually, the film isn’t quite that horrible. It’s better than say, Daredevil…although Wolverine’s post-credits “surprise” owes more than a little to the one that followed the end titles of that rancid Ben Affleck vehicle. The problem with X-Men Origins: Wolverine is that it’s a prequel–and therefore subject not only to handling the double duty of trying to keep an audience enthralled with revealing “new” aspects of the title character, but also connecting the dots between said aspects and what has already been revealed about him in the three X-Men films so far. Unfortunately, director Gavin Hood (Tsotsi, Rendition) and writers David Benioff (Troy, The Kite Runner) and Skip Woods (Swordfish, Hitman) aren’t up to the job. The way the story’s developed, it seems as if Hood and friends sort-of know the details of Wolverine’s true origin in the comics, meshed together things they liked with their own ideas, and then chose to toss in a bunch of other mutants fans might like, because hey–who knows when’s the next time they get to play with such beloved characters as Gambit, the Blob and Scott Summers?

The story begins in 1845, where a young Victor Creed (Michael-James Olsen) stands at the bedside of his sickly best friend James (Troye Sivan). Victor’s father comes a’callin’, apparently drunk, and kills James’ father. Horrified and enraged, James’ mutant power kicks in and sharpened bones extend from his knuckles. Without thinking, he attacks Victor’s father and kills him, just as the man reveals that he only arrived to tell James that he’s his true father, which makes James and Victor brothers (not in the comics, though!). Since Victor had no love for his old man anyway, he asks James if he can run, since terrified residents are on their way, presumably to kill the two freakish boys (Victor has sharpened talons for nails and a mean streak within him that will only grow as he gets older). James is miraculously well enough to run, and the two head off into the night as the opening credits begin, showing them as adults moving through history, fighting in different wars. While this montage is very effective in showing that both men don’t age very much due to their regenerative powers, and that their feral natures–especially Victor’s (now played by Liev Schreiber)–have taken firmer hold over them, the quick-cut scenes also demonstrate one of the many problems to come with telling the tale of Wolverine’s origin.

I honestly believe that part of the problem with this movie is that it isn’t a film made by Marvel Studios. Yes, their name is above the titles, but that’s only because the character is ultimately owned by Marvel Comics. However, before Marvel branched out into the world of filmmaking, they sold the rights to several of their characters to various film studios, Fox among them. Fox hasn’t had a very good track record recently for releasing decent films, whereas Marvel has done the job right thus far on their own, and seems committed to staying the course. If Wolverine had been a Marvel-produced film, then closer attention might have been paid to specific aspects of his origin, such as the fact he fought alongside Captain America during World War II. Marvel has been making a big deal about the impending re-intro of the Captain to the big screen in 2011, even going so far as to have a deleted scene on the Incredible Hulk DVD showing the Captain’s accidental release from the Antarctic by the green goliath. How much cooler would Wolverine’s opening credits have been, if a shot were included of an adult James, rifle in hand, protecting the back of a red-white-and-blue figure who’s got his hands full busting the jaws of several Nazis? What a missed opportunity.

wolverine2That’s an ongoing problem with the story–it’s full of missed opportunities, while going forward with grabbing hold of the wrong ones. After an incident in Korea where Victor kills a superior officer and James (now played by Hugh Jackman, who also produced…and if you’ve seen Deception, you’ll know immediately what a problem this is) defends him, they’re set up before a firing squad and “executed”. To the dismay of the army, the two men survive, and are approached in their jail cell by William Stryker (Danny Huston). The character should be well familiar to X-Men fans, as he played a significant role in the second part of that trilogy. Stryker offers them a chance to join a unique team he’s putting together, supposedly working in the U.S. government’s best interests…yet after accepting, it soon becomes clear they’re nothing but mercenaries, working towards Stryker’s own unseen goals. James quits, heading off to Canada where he shacks up with local hottie Kayla Silverfox (Lynn Collins) until the day Sabretooth–Victor’s new codename–shows up and kills her, supposedly as part of his revenge against all the former teammates that left Stryker’s group. Desperately wanting revenge, James joins up with Stryker once more to accept biological enhancements which will make him indestructible and able to kill Victor, whom he’s never been able to beat before.

The plan goes well and James has unbreakable adamantium grafted to his bones. Yet upon hearing a hint of betrayal from Stryker, James–now with the codename Wolverine, based upon a long-winded story Kayla told him earlier–goes beserk, killing several people in the lab and vowing vengeance upon Stryker, as soon as he deals with Sabretooth. After escaping Stryker’s base, Wolverine somehow ends up in Smallville, discovered naked as a baby Kal-El by Ma and Pa Kent (Julia Blake and Max Cullen, standing in for Phyllis Thaxter and Glenn Ford from Superman: The Movie), who take him in on their farm, calling him “son” the entire time, and even bestowing upon him the very insignificant jacket he wore in the first X-Men film. Seriously. The comparisons are inevitable, which takes away much of the gravitas of what Wolverine has thus far lost. As we are treated to horrendous CGI claws as he sits in their bathroom, examining his new tools of destruction and accidentally chopping their sink in half before sitting down to dinner with his makeshift family, the laughs–both intended and accidental–begin piling up. It’s not until after a chase with a helicopter that was far more thrilling in the trailers than it is here, that things start to get serious again.

When Bryan Singer crafted the first two X-Men films, he at least tried to imbue his characters with a sense of the possible…how such powers and personalities might be able to exist and work in the real world. Once Brett Ratner got his grubby mitts on the franchise with X-3, the laws of real world physics and probability went out the window, and director Hood is quite happy to continue along those lines. As Wolvie becomes aware of Stryker’s real plans, and the list of guest-starring mutants–including a young Scott Summers (Tim Pocock) and Gambit (Taylor Kitsch)–continues piling sky high, more open battles occur in bars and the back alleys of New Orleans. Gee, weren’t mutants trying to keep their abilities and identities secret, out of fear of a human populace that hates them? Oh, wait…prequel! The only thing missing here besides the kitchen sink (but we did have the bathroom) is Jar-Jar Binks.

The movie constantly thumbs its nose at its own internal logic, such as when one of Stryker’s scientists notes that they’ve depleted their supply of adamantium while grafting Wolverine’s bones, and then Stryker suddenly pulls out a gun with six adamantium bullets to put him down after he escapes. The battles are over the top, even for a film like this, with Wolverine and Deadpool going mutant-a-mutant on top of one of the Three Mile Island reactors. And if you thought the CGI de-aging of Patrick Stewart in X-3 was terrifying, let’s just say you ain’t seen nothing yet. The only solid thing this film really has going for it is Jackman’s performance, because honestly…for a film showing up with a $130 million price tag, I couldn’t believe how low budget and set-bound the entire picture appears.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is just one more prequel we didn’t need, which makes one wonder that if Fox could screw up Wolverine’s movie so badly, what will they do with X-Men Origins: Magneto. Did George Lucas have a hand in this, somehow?

DVD Review: “The Uninvited”

The Uninvited has recently come out on DVD, and if you choose to watch it, several other words with an “un-” prefix may wander into your mind. You’ll find the film Uninteresting, and the DVD will quickly become Unwanted and Unwelcome by you or anyone within your household. Viewing it, you’ll find yourself Unwilling to become involved in this very Unwatchable film.

A bastardized remake of the Korean film A Tale of Two Sisters, The Uninvited stars Australian actress Emily Browning (Ghost Ship, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events) as American teen Anna, recently released from a sanitarium after she attempted suicide following her mother’s death in a tragic boathouse explosion (seriously). She returns home to find her older sister, Alex (Arielle Kebbel), still angered by Anna’s supposed “abandonment” — while kid sis was away, their dad, Steven (David Strathairn), started banging the hot live-in nanny, Rachael (Elizabeth Banks), to help cope with his grief.

Interview: The Man Who Would Be THOR!

thor1Although a major player in Norse mythology, the character of Thor is known primarily to comics fans, and only recently to the general public, due to the news that famed director Kenneth Branagh (Peter’s Friends, Dead Again) will be helming a movie for Marvel Studios based on the character’s heroic exploits, due out in 2011.

For those not in the know, Thor is the Asgardian god of thunder, once worshiped by Vikings as a source of strength and bravery, whose name was co-opted by Marvel Comics back in 1962, when the fair-haired character (originally red-headed in the mythology) first appeared in Journey Into Mystery. Thor’s story broke with tradition in several aspects, mainly in the fact that his father Odin, chief of the gods, sought to teach his son humility by trapping him in the body of a mortal, Dr. Donald Blake. Over the years, Thor gained in popularity as he became a charter member of the Avengers (the character will also appear in a live-action Avengers feature, due out in 2012) and Journey Into Mystery officially became the Thor comic book in 1964. Although rooted moderately in Norse mythology, the thunder god’s stories only paid lip service to his true history, until artist/writer Walt Simonson’s epic 1983-1986 run on the series restored the character to his true glory and revitalized fans’ interests in the Norse superhero.

Now the god of thunder–who has had spotty appearances in non-comics media, including an okay run in the Marvel Super-Heroes anthology cartoon and a laughably horrible live-action turn in the 1988 TV movie The Incredible Hulk Returns–faces another potential upswing in popularity with the still-casting Thor: God of Thunder. While Marvel Studios has achieved a true coup in nabbing Kenneth Branagh, a director well versed in Shakespearian lore (Henry V, Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing) to take on a character whose mythic adventures preceded and in some ways partially inspired grand epics such as Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, the true test of whether the film will succeed or fail will depend not so much on the script as on the actor who portrays the titular hero.

While rumored names such as Brad Pitt have been tossed about for being worthy of the role, and Alexander Skarsgard is supposedly cast (still just a rumor!), my own personal favorite choice of known actors for the role was Karl Urban, who played Eomer in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and will soon be seen as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek.

Summer Movie Preview: Ten Films I May or May Not Be Looking Forward To

Normally Bob Cashill does a top-ten list of films he’s looking forward to each summer and fall. As he’s “out of town” this week (which, in the writing industry, is code for “on a bender and can’t be found”), I’ve been asked to step up to the plate and cover for him while he’s “away.”

I’ve chosen ten summer films — well, nine as far as Hollywood’s definition of summer goes (the beginning of May all the way to Labor Day weekend), so forgive me for cheating with my first choice.  I will now give my reasons as to why I’m either looking forward to these films or hope they die miserable, lonely deaths at the box office. Please be aware that while the majority of release dates have been locked down, film studios are sometimes fickle, and some later dates may be subject to change.

1. The Soloist (April 24), starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr., directed by Joe Wright.

I’ve been looking forward to this film, based on the true story of celloist-violinist Nathaniel Ayers, an extremely talented musician who suffers from schizophrenia, for quite some time in spite of the semi-mediocrity of its trailer. While I’m certain the film will deliver the expected highs and lows of the friendship between Foxx’s Ayers and Downey Jr. as the reporter who befriends him, all replete with the expected script beats (pg. 50: “Have characters realize they’re more alike than different in spite of their dissimilar backgrounds”), the real reason to see this movie is for the act-off between two great thesps, and to begin the debate about which one will deserve to walk home with a statue come next year’s Oscars.

2. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (May 1), starring Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber, directed by Gavin Hood.

Yes, this film’s already hit the Internet, so most of you have probably already seen it. I’m waiting till it actually hits theaters, though, because I’d prefer to see the completed effects, thank you very much. Although I don’t understand the fascination with Schreiber (overrated in my book), the real reason for me to see Wolverine is that it’ll be cool to see Jackman as the title character once again. Fanboys and fangirls who vowed to boycott this Fox film due to the studio’s lawsuit brought against Warner Bros. for partial rights to Watchmen profits will more than likely shut the hell up and see it regardless; it could very well be one of the biggest actioners at the box office this year despite its illegal release on the Web. I’m borderline on the story and characters, but I’m looking forward to Jackman’s Wolvie taking a long list of names while he kicks ass.
