At the risk of not being Springsteenaly correct, Linda Ronstadt did an album around 1996 that included a good cover of the song.

I have that version by McLellan. It's quite lovely. I'm sorry to hear he passed away.

I agree that the "Live in NYC" version cannot be improved upon. That said, the late Grant McLellan (of Australia's The Go-Betweens) did a rather nice cover for Uncut magazine 4 or 5 years back.
Thanks for sharing your story. Good luck with the run.

In reading the book "For You," at first it's hard to believe that one performer could possibly have touched this many people this deeply — lifted them from depression, kept them from suicide, helped them through divorce or the death of a parent, or worse, a child. But story after story reveals just how much Springsteen's music and his almost superhuman presence on the concert stage have penetrated people's lives and, in as much as it is possible for music to do so, made them whole.

If I Should Fall Behind was Beth and my wedding song.
Your entry made me weep, dammit.
On another note, I met a friend of yours, Jillian who is a manager for actors at the phone bank I worked for the Obama campaign. Lovely woman.
As if you would be friends with less....
