I'm not sure I feel a need to defend myself to anyone who has "the Moose" for a last name, but the two texts I sent during the first 10 minutes of the show were to update my wife, who had to miss the show at the last minute. isPermaLink="false">http://popdose.com/?p=16567#comment-27943

Sorry I haven't chimed in til now. Yesterday was a travel day...

As much as I enjoyed seeing the show with Scott, who is a WILD MAN -- dude, that thing you did with the duct tape and the chicken during "Spirit in the Night"? I wanna party with you again! -- this was probably the least favorite of the Bruce shows I've seen.

FIrst, the absence of Patti from the stage was a major distraction. Apparently she skipped last tour's O.C. show as well, but in the wake of the affair accusations it couldn't help but be on my mind -- not to mention my wife's. She was stuck at work (hence Scott not sitting in the nosebleed seats) but was texting me, asking if Patti seemed OK--she text-sobbed when I told her Patti wasn't there. Maybe not having her there loosened Bruce up a bit--I had never seen him stage-dive or wander into the crowd before--but this was the first time (maybe since the Tunnel of Love tour, which I didn't see) that a Bruce show had taken on tabloid- fodder implications, and it wasn't a great feeling.

I love seeing Bruce play -- I've been to six of his shows -- and I like his attachment to the Sports Arena over Staples Center. The place is so loveably worn down and old-fashioned, it's like they're playing in a high school gym. So that's nice.

But apart from the requests Scott mentioned, the whole process of which was loads of fun, I thought the set list was not as interesting as past ones. I suppose most people who go to Bruce shows love the ritual aspects -- the air-punching and background-vocal singing and whatnot -- but my favorite part of a Bruce show is when he does something really surprising. That's why my fave Bruce show was on the Devils and Dust tour, where we had no earthly idea what he was going to do next. On Wednesday night there weren't enough real surprises -- "Seeds," yes, and "I'm Goin' Down," but little else on the setlist offered a real "holy cow" moment.

And otherwise the list of non-standards he pulled out -- "Promised Land," "Land of Hope and Dreams," "Waitin' on a Sunny Day," etc. -- seemed to me a bit self-congratulatory and complacent. Yes, Bruce has become more openly political in recent years, and yes, when he was pulling out songs and using them to rail against Bush it was fun, but now that he hasn't got as many political complaints he seems to have woven a thread of liberal congratulation into the show that is just a little...dull.

So I'll take the "Rising" tour, and even the "Magic" tour (with its populist anti-Bushism), over this one. Still, it was great to hang out with Scott!

Sorry I haven't chimed in til now. We are researching a new volume on Darkness of the Edge of Town and would like to contact any fans that attended any of the 1978 shows or that have any memorabilia from that tour. Your part at the very end about family is spot-on. I couldn't have said it better myself. Well done.

Great review, Scott. Including DVDs and bootlegs.
I saw him for the Rising and I was 4 people from the stage. it was a lifechanging show.
This was better.
This was a band that is playing for it's life.
One is dead. A close friend of the band is also gone. The Big Man in on his last legs. His wife is home with the kids.
How much longer are we going to be treated to this?
Pulling out chestnuts isn't just a new gimmick. It's an opportunity to, possibly, say goodbye.
If you look at the handwritten setlits provided on his site, it looks like he was supposed to close with Glory Days. So, we got gifted allright, with Rosalita.
Were you expecting to rock as hard as you did when American Land was played? I was done. I thought, after Land of Hope.. that it was over. Busting out the Celtic number was a nice nail. The show could have ended right there. Then, came Rosie.
I wasn't bothered by too much. Sunny Day is useless and needs to be stricken from the setlist. But that's offset by just how killer Johnny 99 was.
And Outlaw Pete just doesn't work. No matter how hard he ACTs. Putting on a cowboy hat. Treating it like a monologue. It's just a bad bad song and needs to be tossed. But, Working on a Dream really worked for me.
This was an uplifting show for me.
I, too, thought, damn I wish i was sharing this with my wife, though...
Mashing the end of a life, The Wrestler with Racing in the Street, which once might have sounded fresh coming from a young man filled with energy and vigor, took on a new tone. It echoed the sentiments of the former song and turned it into a sad elegy for a life wasted.
This was a great concert. And a nice review. Glad you did it because I would have just heaped praise on it.

Great review. I agree with you on most of it.
