I never really paid any attention to the song and then it was on one of the CD's that she had in her room as she slowly made the transition from living to passing on. The presence of well, God, and also many other souls filled that room for days helping her to make it to the other side. At least this is what I felt was going on. The air was thick with presence of the other world and I at some points was watching from above in the corner of a room (my mind's eye if you will). Just seeing my sister's and I helping her, lying with her, crying with her and each other. Clair de Lune came on many times through those last days of her life and then she had requested it be played at her funeral as well. You know what they say, weddings and funerals...:))). Anyway, that song along with anything from Enya takes me right back to my Mom's room. So, it is a sad memory, but now when I hear it I'd give anything to be back there and holding her in my arms again. So, I guess it is a melancholy song for me. Love, Karyn

This song makes me think of the end of my Mom's life. That's the genius of Debussy - simply wonderful. Great post, Scott.

This is one of those rare pieces of music – from any genre – that commands you to stop doing whatever you are doing, put down whatever you are working on, eliminate all other distractions and simply listen.

It provides a canvas for your thoughts, dreams ,hopes, call them what you will. Funny to see "Clair de Lune" as a "Basement Song," which Debussy likely never considered.

I imagine most of us associate classical or instrumental music with films or, gad, TV commercials. Pieces I like that really stuck with me from movies: Barber's "Adagio for Strings" (PLATOON), Delibes' "Lakme" (which Tony Scott used in THE HUNGER and TRUE ROMANCE), Gorecki's "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs" (FEARLESS), and Erik Satie's "Gnossienne No. 1" (THE PAINTED VEIL).

Nice.
