Scott, This is one of my favorite CH songs, without a doubt. I'm just catching this thanks to the Neil Finn interview posted today. I love the 12 words that you mention, and also:

No fire where I lit my spark
I am not afraid of the dark
Where your words devour my heart
and put me to shame, put me to shame

There's such a wonderful innocence to the "I am not afraid of the dark" that to me reflects the child that lives forever in us, occasionally struggling with that moment of fear, unsure what the next move should be.

The end of this song has alway been a fave of mine bouncing between minor and major chords as it fades…”As time slips by”
