I was completely in the tank for Lone Justice around this time, it merely looked like even though all the elements were in place, the album was doomed to fail.

Your pieces are one of the main reasons I visit popdose. What a beautifully written piece about one of my favorite artists..! Lone Justice was my first concert experience, as they opened up for U2 at the Centrum in Worcester, MA back in '83. I was an instant fan, and have been ever since. Keep up the great writing…!

You lucky dog! I wish I could watch that show again. I wish I could see all of the late 80's SNL shows. Hopefully Lorne Michaels will put them out on DVD someday.

I was AT that SNL show! Watch the show again and look at the front row shot from behind McKee and you will see a man with a shock of bleached white hair. Ah, the 80s.
Fell in love with Maria that very day. Her performance was burned into my heart.
And the Shat was great, too.

Great piece, Scott. I'm a huge Maria McKee fan and own every one of her albums.

“Shelter” is an amazing song, but what sealed the deal for me was seeing her crazed performance of “I Found Love” on SNL. Just amazing.

I just think that radio programmers didn't know what to do with Lone Justice. They were too country for rock and too college underground for country stations. Still, “Shelter” has all of the elements that made U2 so popular.

Yeah, I was totally in the tank for Lone Justice around this time, but it seemed like even though all the elements were in place, the album was doomed to fail. It was too “real” in a way, when the sound of a singing female had to either be either Debbie or Tiffany or Maddy, Maria McKee seemed too grown up for pop.

Luckily, the album has aged well, unlike that previously mentioned triumvirate!
