Grew up in North Olmsted and know the shopping center well. Used to play in Putt-Putt tournaments at the west corner. I'm sure that's not there anymore. Been a Kinks fan since Kinks-Size came out (6th grade at the time - Chestnut Elementary). Went thru the same thing you did in 69-70 when I was listening to The Village Green Preservation Society and Davies singing about lavatories in the backyard (Shangri-la) on my Mangnavox record record player, yes, in the basement. Everyone else listening to acid rock and some blind pinball wizard! (By the way, Ray finally gave Shangri-la its due on his new release with full blown choir accompaniment.) Awesome article. BTW, I never respond to these things, but Ray Davies and North Olmsted and Great Northern Shopping Center was too much for the sensory bank. Thanks for sharing!

Keep in mind, I predate you by over 15 years, but:<br

I noticed that all the kids were kind of singing/ mumbling at about the same pitch and speed... I went around and checked... Class of 17 and 16 were listening to, you guessed it, Pyromania! Since it was the first class of the day, It seemed that most of 'em had started the tape on side one, at the beginning, so were roughly (very roughly) in synch, give or take a minute.<br>I sincerely can't remember what I was listening to, but it was about this time in my life that my older brother started sending me mix-tapes... Husker Du, Replacements (yeah, he was in Mpls) but also X, and other stuff that would become my mainstays through high-school... And I'm pretty sure that from that day forward, just to be an asshole, mind you, I cut down Leppard any chance I could. Even though I liked some of their songs, I liked being an asshole more. Yeah the punk was working... and the punks had listened to some Kinks!

“…timeless compositions like “Don’t Forget to Dance” that offer new insights to the listener as they mature.”<br

In a NOHS Ski Team member's van on one of our training trips to Boston Mills the song came on the air, assuredly it was WMMS. Acting in the manner of a bunch of kids with slightly uncomfortable friendships that have yet to galvanize into meaningful relationships, we turned the song into a parody of our "manager/coach/", Kniola. Altering the verses as well as the refrain to match our jaded opinions of her was our own Wierd Al moment. I still sing the revised version every time the song comes on the air and relive skiing under the lights at Boston Mills on Tuesday nights.

North Olmsted has a downtown?

The Kinks will live forever in my memory based on Lola.
