Could the Julia Child portion of the film have stood on it's own without the Julie Powell portion? It would have been a risky venture because, as you said, biopics about happy lives don't sell too well. I think Streep could have pulled it off because the inherent gimmick of Streep being Child is so strong. That said, it may never have been greenlit without severe alterations to include dramatic conflict.

I like Amy Adams a lot. She has yet to have her really great role in a really great movie, but she's usually all-in in whatever she does. Disney's Enchanted wouldn't have been half as good without her. But I still think Ephron dropped the ball by not smoothing over her character just a little bit. The good cop/bad cop casting works when both cops can bounce off each other. Because of the nature of this movie, Julie suffers and kvetches all the while thinking "WWJD" (what would Julia do) without the benefit of shouting at Julia, "What would you do??!"

At which, Julia would let Julie indulge in a tall glass of "mah-rin-ahhhhhde".

It's an interesting thought there. For this life, the half-and-half approach makes sense, even if it's not wholly satisfying for the reasons you indicated.

Child led a life that was mostly happy and fulfilling–death for a full-fledged biopic.
