Mmmm…seems to me it MIGHT be a good idea to have somebody review this set that actually IS the target demographic. The comments might be a bit more intelligent and less sarcastic.

I like how Charlton Heston watches Woodstock over and over again in The Omega Man. I suspect the real Heston might have preferred something different to be the last movie on Earth, but this set would have prolonged his agony or ecstasy.

Yeah, you're not. I mean, the sound and picture are better, but the jump isn't as huge as it was between VHS and DVD. The studios seem to be banking on people giving in to an irrational desire to own catalog titles on Blu-ray, because a lot of these catalog titles don't have BD-exclusive content.

I get the feeling that a lot of people disagree with this, but I think the real value in the format, at least in the short term, is in stuff like BD-Live content. Unfortunately, most of it seems to suck. For instance, Warners just sent me “Spring Breakdown,” and when I accessed the BD-Live menu, I saw a trailer for…”Spring Breakdown.”

For some reason, I have this recurring image of a hardcore hippie, still trying to tow the tie-dyed line, just going berserk about the 'wicked techno desecration' of this movie. It makes me smile, just a little bit.

Sorry. Old habits die hard.

But the thing that keeps jumping out at me with the Blu-Ray reviews (aside from this one) is just how often most critics are saying the new version isn't so much a step up from the old that it would matter much. It's a comforting thought. I have quite a few DVDs and a player that, as of late, needs the occasional shaking to work (Don't rat me out to the Sony division of DYFS, please!) There are DVD players to be had for less than a $50. Or I could upgrade to Blu-Ray but have $250+ sucked out of my bank account (Yeah, I'd like to see that. I haven't GOT $250. in the bank account!) And what of the stacks of standard DVDs that are supposedly obsolete?

Knowing I'm not really missing all that much more is a help.
