I've always loved that record, and know his son, Chris, who's also a singer-songwriter. He tells me Jim was American Indian and was virtually discovered on a doorstep as a baby in Tennessee and raised by an African-American family. Maybe that's why his music crosses so many genres. Apparently the Human League tried to produce it themselves, they got stuck in a rut, and went producer-shopping. Stock/Aiken/Waterman were going to be tapped to finish the album until A&M stuck Jam & Lewis on it. There are good tunes on the album ("Are You Ever Coming Back?" is an under-appreciated League tune) but my god the songs Jam/Lewis write sound just like Miss Janet's stuff.<br><br>I will take this opportunity to give props to <i>Romanic?</i>, their 1990 album which, I think, is on par at least with <i>Dare!</i>. Their subsequent once-a-decade albums have been pretty good do--being meticulous about their sound helps.
