Thanks to your one-week reprieve I was able to fully catch up this week on last week's post.

I didn't find too much music to like this week but I never was a big Jackson clan fan... well maybe nasty Janet. ;-) But I did find the detail fascinating about Michael's appearance here -- makes sense -- from a business standpoint -- to release back catalog of suddenly superstar artists. No so much from an artistic standpoint though... And I'm actually somewhat surprised that people didn't fall prey to the marketer's schemes in that re-release.

Good call on "Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin'". A couple of points... Jermaine was no longer with Motown at this point in his career, he was actually with Arista at this time. And while it wasn't actually released as a single, for some strange reason it was apparently ok for it to appear as the b-side of the "Do What You Do" single (not to mention the instrumental was the b-side of "Dynamite"). I definitely remember this tune getting lots of airplay, and I also vaguely remember a somewhat "pieced together" video appearing once on FRIDAY NIGHT VIDEOS (since no "official" video of the song was produced).

It's been so long since I had that Joe Jackson disc, Body and Soul, on the turntable. Thanks for the memories. It was sort of an audiophile recording, too, recorded in an old Masonic Lodge normally used for taping classical music by Vanguard Records. Lots of pure organic ambience, captured with vintage Neumann mikes. I recall it being tremendously dynamic, unlike the squished, compressed, midrange-hyped pop dreck of today.

Michael is darkly disturbed, no question. But Jermaine is the Boo Radley of the music world. One minute he's talking about how all the Jacksons shine when just one gets the spotlight, then the next he's talking about shoving a camera up somebody's turd cannon.

I definitely dig a lot of the post-J5 Jacksons stuff. "Can You Feel It" being a personal favorite. I always liked the video for that one, in all it's cheesy sci-fi effects glory. "Torture" is probably the best song they ever did together though.

"How is it that 'Centipede' charted?" is the question that has been plaguing us all since last week's column. My theory is the Michael Jackson backing vocals (see also: Rockwell)
Didn't MJ have a hand in writing that one too? Or am I mentally hallucinating again?

I too like Jermaine, and have fond memories of both "Dynamite" and "Let's Get Serious"(though it's hard to think of the latter without cracking up at Eddie Murphy's impression)

When it comes to guys with that surname not related to the most dysfunctional family in pop history, Joe is... the man (see what I did there? *groan*) Seriously, great songs, though I could do without his rockabilly/swing/big band phase.

In closing: OTHER BANDS PLAY, MANOWAR KILLS!

Good point on "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" - that's a great song and almost certainly would have been another hit thanks to Michael. Sadly, I've listened to Robert Palmer's version from Heavy Nova far more often thanks to the majority of my Jermaine Jackson being on vinyl.
