They both recorded for Arista under the direction of evil overlord Clive Davis. Both have gone on record stating how frustrating it was to record under Clive because, as they got further into their careers, he forced them to do material they didn't like or want to record in an effort to get a hit. You can try to blame Barry for "I'm Your Man", but Clive's fingerprints are all over that one. (He probably had a gun to Barry's head int the studio.) Same with "No One Can Love You More Than Me", "Nice Girls" and even "You Should Hear How She Talks About You" (one of my 80s faves). Barry and Melissa were even good friends - he refers to her in the third line of "Could It Be Magic" (sweet Melissa, angel of my lifetime...).

I know that the Manhattan Transfer aren't cool, but I've always loved their vocal interplay. (We've already established how uncool my tastes are.) :) "Trickle Trickle" was just a fun exercise to show off how well they could harmonize.

Teena Marie rocks! Love her.

"Dancing LIke Lovers" is schmaltzy but has a really nice melody. Mary has a crystal-clear voice, which works well on straightforward numbers like that one.

It's interesting to have Barry Manilow and Melissa Manchester in the same post (not surprising, though, considering how close their names are alphabetically…). He's part of a band called "Sky", which not only contributed most of the music to the movie but they actually appear as the house band at the local bar.

Speaking of Doug Fieger, even if you didn't need more ammunition for your arsenal I'd suggest seeking out the cheesy 1971 drive in flick PRIVATE DUTY NURSES. I'm astonished at the responses to that song - I've gotten e-mails expressing love for it. In many cases I'd concede that maybe it's just me not "getting it" or having weird taste...but I concede nothing here. I will maintain that it's crap, to my grave. I'd be shocked if anyone remembers it - but then again, I'm shocked at a lot of things in this post, so who knows.

Dude – kicking up the tempo and “I'm Your Man” are totally different. And now I'm going to stop talking about filling holes.

Well, you've still got plenty of letters to fill more gaps – and of course the holy grail of '80s music is going to appear in a few weeks – so you'll fill the biggest hole you have. It's a shame it doesn't get a whole lot of airplay these days. Thanks for "calling".

Every time I listen to the song I think I like it more.
