Joel Whitburn is really good at including details in his books to let readers know if recharting hits are re-releases, remixes of previous versions or new versions of older hits.

Yes, it's the same version. But it's such a powerful instrument. She can really wail when she needs to (like on "Midnight" on the first Yaz CD) and then sing with real restraint (such as on "Love Letters" or "That Ole Devil Called Love"). I would have given my right arm to see that reunion tour she did with Vince Clarke in 2008.

Honestly, I did too, the first time I heard “Situation”! A lot. (Okay, there I've said it out loud.) While I will definitely admit that some of her recordings were a little on the sedate (read: boring) side (with "I'm Happy Just To Dance With You" in that group) I always loved how she could communicate so much by using such vocal control. She had no need to scream, rant or rave - she just sang in an old-school, well-trained style. I love her version of "You Won't See Me" and some of the early '80s ballads, like "It's All I Can Do", are just straightforwardly sincere and, dare I say it, touching. I know, nice doesn't usually cut, but it does for me, when you have a voice as beautiful as Anne's is.

And since others have already taken you to task for writing off Alison Moyet as having a man's voice, I'll leave that one alone. :)

I know that I will now be voted out of the club for sure. I'm still trying to figure out why Australians embraced the song wholeheartedly in the 80's. I know it's an Australian song and all, but I don't know why so many Australians bought copies of it. And now I find out that another entire country embraced it wholeheartedly. (I was rather hoping that the love for "What About Me" would remain confined to that little island continent tucked away in the Southern Hemisphere, and not spread to the rest of the world).

Very unsettling.

Mexico?

“Greatest rock song of the decade”??

“What About Me”???

Thanks for letting us know, drxl, but I find all of that decidedly unsettling. They were never that big in Europe, that may be the reason for me not knowing them, although I crew up in the 80ies. There are some great TV performences by The Motels from 1979: http://tinyurl.com/lqelrw.
