I just wanted to say thanks for reminding me of Sherriff. I've been trying to remember who did that song for ages. I grew up in Jersey and remember WPLJ would play the song often, then do a little banter over the closing note, which as you know, is high enough to cause dogs pain and lasts for six hours. My favorite on-air DJ comment was, "Sounds like somebody's Jockeys are a little too tight today." Ah, the 80s... when a DJ (or veejay!) could actually be snarky about a song without losing their job over it...

Hi, first time poster here, immediate fan since stumbling across this blog last night. I fell for "The Second Time Around" on the first listen and "Dead Giveaway" was irresistible to my ears. I think that perhaps they came out just a few years too soon. If there ever was an act perfect for videos, it was Shalamar. They were great looking, stylish and they could dance up a storm. Jody kind of picked up on those attributes in her solo career. They left behind a great legacy of pop-soul gems.<br><br>Even though Shannon's songs do sound the same, it was a great sound! I think "Give Me Tonight" is much more powerful than "Let The Music Play".

Like most everyone here, I was a huge Shalamar fan back in the day. I always liked that song, for some reason. The mp3 I have is from a British compilation CD I got in Hong Kong in 1996 (good memories) and it's the only version I've listened to since then. I do own the 45 from the US so I just need to pull it out.<br><br>Alison's version of "Whispering Your Name" is magnificent. I like how she didn't change the gender, making it a lesbian song of sorts. It add some intrigue to the lyric line that way.<br><br>I've always loved "A Good Heart" too. I was working on Canal St. in New Orleans when it first hit the Hot 100, and I remember checking a few times a week at the big record store there to ask if they had it in yet. One of the women behind the counter starting calling me "that Feargal Sharkey guy" every time I came in after awhile. :) "Never Never" is also very cool. I actually have the promo 45 of that one as well from my days at B97 in New Orleans.

I never noticed the difference in samples in different versions of “Theme From S-Express”. I was a DJ in high school and snagged "Amnesia" the minute it came out, thinking Shalamar would build on the success of "Dancing in the Sheets." My enthusiasm got the best of me, and I thought it was going to be a huge hit. I'm actually surprised it got up to #63. It bombed at the high school dances.

Haha! I remember when I finally made the switch from cassettes to CDs in the 1990s that was one of the harder albums in my collection to find (I think it may have been out of print at that point). In any case, it took a whole lot of trips to a whole lot of used CD stores before I was able to get my hands on a copy (but so worth it).

I'm with you, Jon – “Everything's Different Now” is fantastic and one of my favorites too. My brother had the 12" single and played it a lot. Yeah, the verses are clunky, but the chorus is killer. I think part of the reason I liked it was this. If this guy really IS looking to get away to somewhere where "there's no care or a worry", and Shannon, despite being his "lover", isn't even sure about this...maybe SHE's what he wants to get away from. And I liked the idea of him longing to ditch her, only to find her making plane and hotel reservations his getaway...for two.<br><br>I read a lot more into pop lyrics than is probably healthy.

I always liked “Do You Wanna Get Away” by Shannon. Any fan of her early stuff should seriously check out "Midnight Lounge"...her music has progressed with the times and is awesome. She also just released a new album called "The Makeover" with new tracks along with "makeovers" of some of her (and others') big hits. Totally underrated. (I have been and continue to be a huge fan, as you might have guessed)!

Completely agree with you about Shalamar!

And to go even further, Jody Watley's been making damn good albums long after the 80's and 90's.
