Kathy's voice is so memorable - all four sisters could sing and had workable voices but Kathy's was the most distinctive. The Chic LPs were both great - I own them both on CD. "Let's Go On Vacation", the third single from "Love Somebody Today", only hit the R&B charts, but it's very jazzy, with a cool lead from big sister Debbie. Definitely one of my faves from that time.

And of course I have to love a group that names a song after me - "Frankie". :) Nile Rodgers produced that one by himself, and while it's cute, I never quite got what he was going for. I'm still surprised it hit #1 in the UK.

"Keep It Tight" is another great running song - so catchy and fast.

I've already shared my Patty Smyth love. I think I actually like the Rod Stewart cover of "Downtown Train" better than Patty's because it's a sensitive song and he does it more sensitively, in my book. She can still sing the hell out of any song, though.

Sinitta's version of "Right Back Where We Started From" is about as generic as possible. The fact that the song is so catchy is about the only thing that saved it. :) She's been a coach on the X Factor in the UK recently, thanks to her ex-fiance, Simon.

I'm glad Sister Sledge got some props here. It sounds like a Broadway showtune, which is why you probably cringe. But if you can just imagine the big musical production number that would go with it... Seriously, it sounded like a lost song from "Fiddler on the Roof," or something...

What, am I the only one that liked “Seasons”? If a song strikes your fancy, seek out the corresponding album (or the closest in the chronology for single-only tracks). Tinderbox is worth having on CD (in addition to being a good record) for the awesome extended mix of "Cities in Dust". I used to have most of their catalog, having been influenced by an ex-girlfriend, but never listened to the bulk of it enough to absorb.

I'd recommend starting with the original hits collections…Once Upon a Time (which covers early singles up to '81) and the ineviably-titled Twice upon a Time ('82-'92). Just type in "steely dan dallas" or "steely dan sail the waterway" and away you go.

Good luck finding an "official" version of the single, though. It's ultra-ultra rare, and the tracks (aside from an appearance on a similarly rare European EP) have never been reissued.

Somebody's posted the tracks on Youtube.
