Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’90s, Vol. 37

Dave Steed September 24, 2012 12

Section 3: The Airplay chart

Lauryn Hill hit #35 with her first charting tune, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”

Hole hit #58 with “Celebrity Skin”

“I Go Blind” “Sad Caper” and “I Will Wait” were all non-single hits for Hootie & the Blowfish.

James Horner hit #55 in 1998 with “Southampton” from the Titanic soundtrack.

Whitney Houston had three more tunes that weren’t released as singles but charted anyway,
“Something In Common” with Bobby Brown, “Queen of the Night” and “Look Into Your Heart”

You hit the nail on the head with the Whitney track. I had to get through the intro to recognize it, which is a crime for a Whitney Houston track. Other than that, pretty generic group for me, although I’ve always had a soft spot for “Secret of Life.”

I want to hear “Mirage”-era Fleetwood Mac do a version of “Malibu” with Stevie Nicks singing and Lindsey Buckingham giving the song a proper guitar solo somewhere on it.

    To the time machine!

All I Want was originally recorded by the Lightning Seeds and was the follow up single to the top 30 hit “Pure”.

Follow-up question: Did this series go from volume 36 to volume 38?

36 and 37 were so bad that I just chose to skip them. Seems I got my numbering off a bit – this is 36.

    Adina Howard

    “My Up and Down” 1995, #68 … download link’s dead !

  • Wall Sound

I would have saved Adina for the start of next week’s entry (whatever volume it is) so that picture would show up right underneath the “Ass End” header. As(s) it is, she’s at the ass end of the ass end, so it’s still apropos.

I’ll give Song of the Week honors to the Butch Vig remix of “Shamrocks and Shenanigans”, which conjures hazy memories of boozy weekends. (In between the booty and the alcohol, this might be my most depraved BF comment to date.)

Indeed. The original version is quite good.

That said, that Susanna Hoffs album with “All I Want” is a FANTASTIC album, one of the best of the decade. Stuff like “King Of Tragedy”, “Beekeeper’s Blues”, “Enormous Wings”–tremendous. For that matter, I’ve only been able to listen to her new album a couple of times (see the Popdose interview she recently did) but it’s very, very good. Also got to see her live several times during that period and those were great shows. BTW, did you see her on the Emmys last night? It was blink-or-you’ll-miss-her, but she was onscreen when her husband won Best Director/TV Movie or Miniseries for Game Change.

Man, for someone who can go on about how great Susanna Hoffs is, you’d think I’d like pop music. But according to this article, I don’t. I find Bruce Hornsby pretty dull.

This one I do know. Can’t get this to work for some reason. I think I ended up corrupting my file somehow. I’ll include it at the top of next week’s post to make up for it.

Too much looking at Adina Howard’s ass. It’s 37 now and it’s staying that way.
