Columbia Pictures had a field day with this movie, but at first there was almost zero confidence in it. There was a lot of competition at the box office that year, so the studio decided to offer a free matinee on either Memorial Day or 4th of July (I can't remember which.) Free is a good price, but what sealed the deal was that it was hot as balls that summer all across the country. Theaters all around were packed but it's debatable whether it was for the "wax on, wax off" or the air conditioning.

The strategy worked, I suppose. Those who didn't get in on the free screening paid to go see it, their reasons being their own. I can't imagine there being serious peer pressure about this. "You're the only one who didn't see Karate Kid 2? Loo-zer!!"
