title="Omnivore Recordings" href="http://omnivorerecordings.com/" target="_blank">Omnivore Recordings. The contest got a great response, and a winner was chosen and notified on Friday. Thanks to everyone who entered.

If you didn’t win last week, don’t worry, I have another opportunity for one lucky reader this week. The prize is, once again, pretty amazing. It’s another Omnivore Recordings release, this time it’s reissue copies of the two Jellyfish studio albums, Bellybutton and Spilt Milk, presented on RTI’s HQ 180-gram vinyl. Bellybutton is pressed on beautiful translucent blue vinyl, and Spilt Milk on equally lovely green vinyl. Bellybutton also includes a special tri-fold LP sleeve.

It’s worth noting that these albums have never been released on vinyl before, and that the colored vinyl is only available on the first 1,500 copies of each album, after which they will be released on black vinyl.

But wait, there’s more, and this is for the real fans. Omnivore originally pressed the albums on standard weight vinyl, but the test pressings were rejected and sent back to the factory to be melted down. A few copies were retained though, Bellybutton still on translucent blue vinyl, and Spilt Milk on what is described as “purple swirly vinyl.” Our contest winner gets a copy of each of these test pressings as well. So that’s four LPs in all.

Do you want to win this amazing package? Of course you do. Read on to find out how.

In the early ’90s, while a lot of bands were turning to grunge, Jellyfish was still flying the banner for power pop. The band, founded by Andy Sturmer and Roger Manning, arose from the ashes of a band called Beatnik Beach. Jellyfish didn’t have a long career, but they remain extremely influential and their music is still prized by aficionados everywhere.

As I mentioned earlier, Jellyfish only made two studio albums. Fortunately they were both brilliant. Bellybutton is something of a masterpiece, while Spilt Milk is merely great. Both albums feature great songs, terrific production and arrangements, and powerful vocals and first-rate drumming from Sturmer.

The first Jellyfish album, Bellybutton (1990), also features Jason Falkner. Falkner had played in a Paisley Underground band known as the Three O’Clock. When that band broke up, Falkner and Manning played together for awhile while both were living in southern California. Eventually Manning moved back to San Francisco, and when Sturmer and Manning needed a guitar player for their first album, Falkner got the call.

The music on Bellybutton drew on a wide range of influences that included the Beatles, the Beach Boys, XTC, and Queen. The album wasn’t a huge success with the most successful single, “Baby’s Coming Back,” making it to #62 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.

Falkner wasn’t happy about just being the band’s guitar player and left Jellyfish after the Bellybutton tour. Back to being a duo, Sturmer and Manning brought in a group of studio musicians, including Jon Brion, to make their second album, Spilt Milk (1993). It was a much more elaborate record, at times close to being over the top, but the great songs, vocals, and drumming were still in place. The Queen influence was even more present.

It wasn’t meant to last however, and by the following year, owing to the usual “creative differences” between Sturmer and Manning, Jellyfish was no more. In their wake they left two wonderful albums, and a lot of promise unfulfilled.

Now, to win the 180-gram vinyl copies of Bellybutton and Spilt Milk, AND the rejected test pressings of each each album, just answer the following question.

What recently deceased bass player, best known for his work with Hall & Oates, played on the second Jellyfish album, Spilt Milk?

I know. It’s a gimme. Send an email to <a

Seriously, does this guy ever rest? He directed Contagion last fall and he has another film lined up for later this year!

Haywire is an action movie (because that’s just about the only genre the eclectic Soderbergh hasn’t made) starring mixed martial arts superstar Gina Carano. Apparently the director saw her on TV and thought, “Someone should make a movie around her! Hey, I think I’ll make a movie around her! And when I go to film it, I’ll enlist Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, and Bill Paxton. Aw hell, why not get an Academy Award winner, too. I’ll call Michael Douglas!”

Okay, maybe it didn’t go down that way. But those are the supporting cast members in Haywire, and the film was written by Lem Dobbs, who also wrote Soderbegh’s brilliant, The Limey, so this film has the potential of being one kick ass movie.

In honor of Haywire’s release, Popdose has a Soderbergh prize pack to giveaway to one lucky reader. The prize includes a DVD copy of Ocean’s Eleven, Soderbergh’s 2001 remake of the Rat Pack movie; a DVD copy of Traffic, the 2000 film that won Soderbergh a Best Director Academy Award; as well as a Haywire T-shirt, rubber bracelet and mini poster.

Originally shot on 16mm film at Fort Worth, Texas in 1978, the footage has been restored in high definition, with the sound remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original multitrack tapes. The result is an explosive visual reminder of why The Rolling Stones are the best live band on the planet.

The movie features many Stones classics including Honky Tonk Woman, Tumbling Dice, Brown Sugar, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Miss You and Beast of Burden, plus an interview with Sir Mick Jagger shot in August 2011 where he introduces the concert and offers an insight into its significance in the band’s history.

Mick Jagger says: “Fort Worth was an amazing night in a blistering hot July. Watching it now, the band were really intense and focused, but we were also having a blast with the fans who were really getting into the show and the new tracks from “Some Girls”. I think our fans will love the chance to see this concert movie for the first time on the big screen.”

The Rolling Stones 1978 tour of the USA in support of that year’s Some Girls album is considered by fans to be one of their very best. The tour followed immediately on the release of the album and by the time the band arrived in Texas in mid-July it had hit the No.1 spot on the US charts. The tour took a “back to basics” approach, with the band and their music very much at the forefront, and little or no elaborate staging.

Filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on 18th July 1978, this concert is typical of the tour with The Rolling Stones delivering a raw, energetic performance in front of a crowd who are clearly loving the show. Many of the tracks from Some Girls are included in the live set with a sprinkling of Stones classics from earlier albums. This is truly The Rolling Stones at their peak.

<iframe

Released in theaters over the summer, this wildly praised, microbudgeted sensation has roared onto Blu-ray and DVD (man, we should write for the PR companies– a jest!). A time for family, food and bloodshed. Wait, what was that last one?

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is a reimagining of jolly old Saint Nick. Instead of the cookie gobbling, cheery old guy who loves children and brings them gifts, writer/director Jalmari Helander brings us a vision of Santa Claus as a man who enjoys punishing the naughty.

Here’s a synopsis:

It’s the eve of Christmas in northern Finland, and an ‘archeological’ dig has just unearthed the real Santa Claus. But this particular Santa isn’t the one you want coming to town. When the local children begin mysteriously disappearing, young Pietari and his father Rauno, a reindeer hunter by trade, capture the mythological being and attempt to sell Santa to the misguided leader of the multinational corporation sponsoring the dig. Santa’s elves, however, will stop at nothing to free their fearless leader from captivity. What ensues is a wildly humorous nightmare – a fantastically bizarre polemic on modern day morality.

With a darkly comic look at the holidays, this Finnish export was recently released on Blu-ray and DVD. In other words, you could still go see it four weeks after its release. The film also features a breakout performance by Melissa McCarthy, who stole every frickin scene she was in.

We here in Popdose land have 3 DVD copies of Bridesmaids to give away. Easy as a shot of tequila!

Although in Bridesmaids, the bachelorette party didn’t quite go as planned, yours doesn’t have to end so poorly! Here is our helpful little guide to jumpstart the perfect last night out and to make sure the bachelorette party is one to remember!

The Location: Vegas, baby! Why not splash the cash and head over to Vegas or Miami for a really wild night out? With casinos, hundreds of bars, restaurants and clubs, cities like these are the perfect locations
for a fantastic bachelorette party! Just try not to get too drunk and thrown off the plane before you make it there, and avoid sleeping pills with alcoholic cocktails at all costs!

Transportation: With so many places and bars to visit, hiring a lavish limo could be the perfect solution to
your travelling issues. You could take a brief tour around the area while sipping champagne on the plush leather seats as some amazing party tunes are being blasted out to get you and all your girl friends in the party mood. Definitely a fantastic way to start the night out of right and see some amazing sights at the same time!

A Bridesmaids Themed Night: Why not go all out like Annie, Helen and the rest of the girls and create a themed
bachelorette party? You could create a Paris themed night with puppies in berets, a real fountain turned into a chocolate fountain plus a giant cookie and a replica of the Eiffel Tower. Or you could create your bachelorette party based on the film, using some of their crazy antics to make your night out unforgettable! But a word to the wise: try not to push over the chocolate fountain…

Accessories: It’s only right that you and the girls deck yourselves out in some outlandish accessories to make sure everyone knows you’re on a bachelorette night out! You could all wear matching t-shirts with the bride’s face printed on them, or even get creative and come up with some nicknames for you and all of your friends and have those printed on the back of the t-shirts.
The bride-to-be should also be decked out in some crazy gear too such as a veil, garter and a sash to make her stand out in the crowd. Why not get some light up buttons, stickers, crowns to really make your outfits unforgettable!

QUESTION: Where was the bridal party in the film going when they were kicked off their plane?
Summary: America’s favorite extended family is back for even more laughs when Modern Family: The Complete Second Season arrives on Blu-ray and DVD September 20th from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Packed with tons of exclusive features and never-before-seen footage, Modern Family: The Complete Second Season Blu-ray and DVD will satisfy even the most diehard fans. Each set includes all 24 episodes of the critically acclaimed hit plus deleted family interviews, extended and deleted scenes, a hilarious gag reel, a music video and much more. The ARP for Blu-ray is $49.99 and DVD is $39.99 respectively.

The Pritchett clan has Jay sitting at the head, a true guys’ guy experiencing a bit of mid-life crisis, has remarried a much younger wife, Gloria, whose passion and loyalty is matched by her 11-year-old son, Manny, a boy wise beyond his years. Blending together into this new family has quite the learning curve with some culture clashes, a few awkward misunderstandings, and plenty of sweet victories along the way

Jay’s grown daughter, Claire, has her own family. Claire and Phil are the proud parents of three kids with whom they want that open, healthy, honest relationship. It’s not always easy, especially when you have a teenage daughter who’s growing up a little fast, a too-smart-for-her-own-good middle daughter and a scatterbrained boy. On top of that, Phil wants to be the “cool dad,” while Claire is just trying her best to run a tight ship, determined not to let her kids have the rebellious childhood she had.

Claire’s brother and Jay’s grown son, Mitchell, adopted a Vietnamese baby with his partner of five years, Cameron. Opposites attract in this household, with Cameron having a wonderfully big personality and maybe a flare for the dramatic, whereas Mitchell is the more serious of the two. They balance each other out and are doting fathers trying to do their best as new parents.

All of these three families are unique unto themselves, and together they give us an honest and often hilarious look into the sometimes warm, sometimes twisted embrace of the modern family.

“Modern Family” stars Ed O’Neill as Jay, Julie Bowen as Claire, Ty Burrell as Phil, Sofía Vergara as Gloria, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell, Eric Stonestreet as Cameron, Sarah Hyland as Haley, Nolan Gould as Luke, Ariel Winter as Alex and Rico Rodriguez as Manny. The series is produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television in association with Levitan Lloyd Productions. The DVD will also feature a bonus performance of the classic “Stagger Lee” from legendary bluesman Taj Mahal’s opening solo set for these special shows.

Marsalis, Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and nine-time Grammy® Award winner, writes about his collaboration with Clapton, a 19-time Grammy recipient, in the album’s liner notes: “…we wanted these concerts to sound like people playing music they know and love, not like a project.”

To help them achieve that level of devotion, Marsalis and Clapton were joined on stage by Dan Nimmer (piano), Carlos Henriquez (bass), Ali Jackson (drums), Marcus Printup (trumpet), Victor Goines (clarinet), Chris Crenshaw (trombone, vocals), Don Vappie (banjo) and Clapton’s longtime keyboardist/sideman Chris Stainton. Marsalis says the group combined the sound of an early blues jump-band with the sound of New Orleans jazz to accommodate the integration of guitar/trumpet lead, a combination that gave the musicians the latitude to play different grooves, from the Delta to the Caribbean and beyond.

The band nimbly navigated a diverse set list that touched on different styles, from the four-on-the-floor swing of Louis Armstrong’s “Ice Cream” and the southern slow-drag of W.C. Handy’s “Joe Turner’s Blues” to the traveling blues of “Joliet Bound” and the boogie-woogie jump of “Kidman Blues.” After opening the shows with his solo set, Mahal returned to join the band on “Corrine, Corrina” and the New Orleans funeral standard “Just A Closer Walk With Thee.”

The one song not selected by Clapton for the show was his own “Layla,” which was requested by bassist Henriquez and arranged as a Crescent City dirge to tremendous results. On his review of the performance, David Fricke of Rolling Stone wrote: “In the [song’s] instrumental break, Clapton hit a series of stabbing licks lightly crusted with distortion, followed by Marsalis’ slow parade of clean hurting peals – a moving dialogue in lovesickness and blues routes.”
<p
