Name That Tune, Game Fourteen

Friday, April 18th, 2008 by Scraps

Hey everybody. Welcome to the fourteenth peace-disturbing week of Name That Tune at Popdose. Even among the most ancient peoples, games had rules, and traditionalists that we are, our games are no different, except we don’t club you if you break the rules:

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses.
  • The Puzzle clip may only be guessed once between updates. You may always guess the puzzle song once between updates, even if you have used up your three regular guesses.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation. How the game is played:I have uploaded twenty-five very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will, damn them). There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 25). No acrostic this time: just twenty-five songs that have something in common, which taken together point to the identity of the puzzle song. (And of course, if the puzzle song is guessed early, that ought to help nail down the rest of the songs.)

Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

    And here are the clips:

  • Name That Tune, Game Thirteen

Hey everybody. Welcome to the thirteenth finger-snapping week of Name That Tune at Popdose. Rules? We got your steenkin’ rules right here:

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses.
  • The Puzzle clip may only be guessed once between updates.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation. How the game is played:

There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 25). Once again, we’re doing an acrostic game: The first letter of the name of the artist of the first 24 songs spells out a clue to the identity of the puzzle song. (And of course, if the puzzle song is guessed early, that ought to help nail down the rest of the songs.)

Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

Hey everybody. Welcome to the eleventh hair-pulling week of Name That Tune at Popdose. You know what I like at the start of a game? A set of clear rules.

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses.

Once again, we’re doing an acrostic game: The first letter of the name of the artist of the first 20 songs spells out a clue to the identity of the puzzle song. (And of course, if the puzzle song is guessed early, that ought to help nail down the rest of the songs.)Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. Hey everybody. Get your eardrums (and hammers and stirrups) ready for the tenth brow-bunching week of Name That Tune at Popdose. Rules are the order of the day! And here they are:

  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation. We’ve got a bumper crop this week: thirty-four clips to guess. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will). There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 34). No acrostic this time, just a simple puzzle: the first 33 songs taken together are a clue to the identity of the puzzle song. Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • Clip 23 may only be guessed once between updates.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation. For those new to the game, here’s how it works: I have uploaded twenty-three very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will). There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 23). • Name That Tune, Game Six

Friday, February 15th, 2008 by Scraps

Hey everybody. Welcome to the sixth game of Name That Tune at Popdose. Let’s start with the rules:

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

    • Maximum three guesses between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play.
    • Clip 21 may only be guessed once between updates.
    • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation.

For those new to the game, here’s how it works: I have uploaded twenty-one very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades, from the 1920s to the present. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will). There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the main twenty songs. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 21). This time there’s no acrostic — no real puzzle, in fact — song 21 is just harder (I think) than the others. All the songs share something in common that will quickly become obvious, and the thing they have in common is truer of song 21 than any of the others. In addition, the order of the first twenty songs points toward song 21 (just not in a spelling way this time).

Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

    And here are the clips:

    1. clip 1
    2. clip 2
    3. clip 3

    Name That Tune, Game Five

Friday, February 1st, 2008 by Scraps

Hey everybody. Welcome to the fifth week of Name That Tune at Popdose. Since we’ve had a little bit of trouble with this, let’s put the rules up front:

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • Maximum three guesses between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play.
  • Clip 21 may only be guessed once between updates.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation. For those new to the game, here’s how it works: I have uploaded twenty-one very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades, from the 1950s to the present. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will). There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 21). The puzzle is a little different this time: Letters in the titles of the songs will spell out a clue to the identity of the puzzle song. For some of the songs, the first letter of the title is part of the clue; for others, it’s the last letter. This is indicated below for each clip. (And of course, if the puzzle song is guessed early, that ought to help nail down the rest of the songs.)Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

    And here are the clips:

    1. clip 1 - last letter
    2. clip 2 - first letter
    3. clip 3 - last letter
    4. clip 4 - first letter
    5. clip 5 - last letter

    8. clip 8 - last letter
