I loved Free (I never saw the original band, but caught a later incarnation with Rabbit at Academy of Music in NYC), they did the slow bluesy rock thing better than anybody. Kossoff was a tragic figure, but a wonderful stylist and a great, melodic player whose style perfectly fit the band. Unlike so many guitarists, he never sounded like he was in a rush, he just played the right note and the right time and used feedback in a very melodic way. It sounds paradoxical, but perfecting simplicity the way Free did and the way Kossoff did with his playing is very, very difficult.
