To this day, and I listen to a ton of music, I've heard no peer. Say what you want about the countless reissues, there is one good thing to come out of them – the sound quality is mind bogglingly good. And this brings me to my main point… I'd like to weigh in on a comment made by the reviewer here, Mr. Ken Shane.

In the body of his review, Mr. Shane says “Though the tracks do seems to have been freshened up a bit, there is nothing as revelatory as what we heard on the recent Beatles remasters.” Seriously???

What are you listening to… a transistor radio? Perhaps you've been spoiled by the box sets and your comments relect the minor improvement to the latest “75″ box set?

I have to say that ever since the box sets of the 50's, 60's and 70's, RCA or BMG or Sony or whoever the f*** “they” are called now, has done a stupendous job with the sound quality of all of the Presley catalog. The clarity has been exemplary and should be the yardstick by which all others are judged.

Perhaps it's not the remastering that should be getting the credit. Perhaps because it was “Elvis” that RCA used the best engineers and equipment – they certainly used great musicians and vocal backing in the Jordanaires! These old recordings were just done so well that the Beatles ( or The Rolling Stones or… fill in the blank) can never hope to compare. I love the Beatles (and The Stones by the way) and although their respective remasters are a great sonic improvement over what's come before, all you have to do is listen to Elvis' very first stereo recording from 1960 – “Make Me Know It” – to hear how clean and present this 50 year old track is. Remarkably, it still stands up today. It is simply… illuminating. And it would be years before The Beatles and George Martin would even start recording in mono or screw up their stereo counterparts.

Other than that, the article is well written and I have to agree with most of Mr. Shane’s well considered points.

Now if I could just get Jorgenson’s e-mail to tell him to stop pushing the horn sections down so far in the mix that you can barely hear them on the live recordings… to wit – don’t buy the “remastered” Aloha from Hawaii (1998) or the On Stage (1999 – the new Legacy edition is superb however – I hate having to buy things two and three times though).

He would have been 75 years old this year (2010)? I feel the world has been deprived of a great musical elder statesman, and I'm saddened that we were never to have seen Elvis grow old.

As for the new collection, I'll most likely pass as I'm bound to have every cut on one comp or another (except, perhaps, for the gospel material), but I applaud its exhaustiveness and chronology…even if Paul Oakenfold's “Rubberneckin'” remix is missing.

What I'd really like to see someday is a nice, judicious one- or two-disc collection of album tracks from the mid-60s through the 70s. That stuff is always underrepresented on these compilations(except for the “Memphis record” 68-69 tracks), and reading “Careless Love” made me interested in hearing some more of it. (Not interested enough to buy the '60s and '70s boxes, though–that's too much.) This new box has more of that stuff than the usual comps, so that's good news…but I'd still like for it to have had a bit more.
