Polite. That's a perfect way to describe him.

I saw John when he was touring Room for Squares, and let me tell you, he milked that mostly teenage female audience for every squeal they had in 'em. He even sang a few lines of “I Want It That Way,” and made sure the band played far, far behind him. Make no mistake, he's perfectly content playing the role of boy toy.

Boo. When I heard the album title initially, I thought this would be the big one, where he finally actually plays the rocking crap he used to discuss in his Guitar World magazine column. And there have been the occasional glimpses of that neo-guitar god, particularly when he popped up for Billy Joel's first Shea show (talk about a guy who wrote below his capacity.)

Perhaps what he really needs is to be a part of a “supergroup” where he could play the guitar and not live up to the expectations of the Mom-Rock set. Won't anyone find a Derek that will let him be a domino?

I've had the same trajectory as a 'fan': fell for the schmooze early on, was ridiculed, defended him with his live chops, played the JM Trio Live CD for people, Slow Dancing in a Burning Room came out, was ridiculed some more, and now here we are with a new single that sounds exactly like Stop this Train. I've more or less given up on him at this point. Will give the new album a listen, but this time it's our little secret….
