It's a diversion, sure, and it's not going to change the world, but it's tasty enough, and according to iTunes I've played it 19 times over the past week... apparently it's a hit in my ears. The album has plenty of that sound that makes Norah Jones popular, even if most of it's not coming from a piano. And you're right about the textures and atmosphere; the band lends itself well to whatever her point is. Look, I've given up on ever seeing a new Exile on Main Street, London Calling, or Dark Side of the Moon from anybody. That said, Norah Jones' new album is pretty sweet stuff. Then again, so is Chuck Prophet's. And Them Crooked Vultures.

Man, I can't stop listening to The Fall. I thought the songs were poor, but after the band had worked through them for awhile, they came off somewhat better in a live setting than on the Not Too Late CD.

I'm also disappointed with her move away from the piano. Her long-ago appearance on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz program showed her potential as an interpreter of classic songs, in the vein of other piano playing singers like Carmen McRae or Blossom Dearie.

I will certainly give the new album a chance, because Norah is generally good in any genre she tackles. A couple of the El Madmo tunes are fun, even though it was all a joke. I still think her forté is blues and jazz, and it irks me a little that she can't see that. Granted, it's a little more work to play Ray Charles or Gershwin than it is Willie Nelson. I don't know if that's part of the reason or not. If her career must stay in the pop mainstream, at least if she can divert some attention from the other classless contenders (Gaga is caca), more power to her.

After the near total boredom that was her previous album, almost any change would be welcome.
