There's something really brilliant to that. Bogdanovich was able to be totally objective while making the movie. Contrast that with Phil Joanou who's love of U2 had more a detrimental effect on Rattle & Hum than a positive one.

I think you're correct….because there is also Petty interview footage in the film as well that comes from an earlier time period, perhaps the Echo era? It's the footage of Tom with a beard. And obviously, there's some older interview footage with Howie, who'd passed on by that time. The thing that impressed me about the documentary is that Bogdanovich was not chosen for the project because he was a huge Tom Petty fan. In fact, he was far from a huge fan, and the band approached him because they'd really liked his work in film, and thought he would be the guy that could capture the story in the right way. Total win. I had no idea that Ron Blair was a video nut – and that's what really makes the documentary a winner….you're hearing a great story of some random event, and boom, there's video of the incident. Amazing.

The Bogdonavich doc is essential viewing for any rock and roll fan, not just Petty fanatics. If I'm not mistaken, I don't think Lynch was interviewed by Bogdanovich and that what you see in the film is old footage from the mid 90's; Lynch said he was through with re-hashing the past.

Ken, I'll have to hunt that interview down. I know the story on Lynch, and it would be interesting to know if the ice has thawed at all between the two in recent years. Certainly, as much as he is discussed in the liner notes, you would think that it's possible that perhaps they've patched things up personally. Warren Zanes makes mention in the liner notes that he was surprised at how often Lynch's name came up during interviews/discussions for the liner notes of this project. As one with a pretty good BS detector, all of the praise for Lynch comes off as pretty genuine. Regardless, it's nice that they were completely inclusive and didn't whitewash anybody out of the history.
