Without intrusive doctoring, you're out. The fans don't want the sound to change, only to hear it more clearly. The '09 remasters deliver that. Drums sound brittle because they were recorded that way. So what? Doesn't detract from the pleasure derived from listening to the greatest rock music ever put on tape (yes, TAPE..no DDD in the sixties).

Audiophiles are a sad bunch, sitting around with their $5000 turntables and 80% virgin vinyl, seeking perfection in an imperfect world. The music should wash over you and, yes, you should celebrate any technological improvements that manage to bring out the music you love more clearly and with real punch.

The delights are many on these new releases. Buy them both (STEREO BOX and BEATLES IN MONO). Don't be swayed by nit-picking grumps. Since acquiring these magnificent sets, I'm having the time of my life! End of story.

What you're after, obviously, is 21st century sound from mid-20th century recordings. Without intrusive doctoring, you're out. And thus is for me the only way the Beatles catalog will ever get the proper treatment it deserves.

The 1999 CD sounds as if the songs were written and recorded yesterday. The fidelity is finally up to modern standards. The Bass is tight (not compressed and muddy), the drums punchy (not brittle like on these new remasters) and every sound effect and vocal track perfectly transparent.

These remasters are garbage, they are like George Lucas and his holding out on releasing Star Wars on different formats until he needs to show a corporate profit. The Beatles remasters are here to fuel a corporation, not to sastify the fans. If they really wanted to they could have remixed from the original tracks/stems, just like with the 1999 Yellow Submarine cd...Instead they are going to wait on that and make you buy the catalog a third if not fourth time. They want your money. That's all. They don't care about artistic integrity or the music.
Remastering music if you have the original tapes to remix is an archaic and obnoxiously conservative approach to music preservation.

No we aren't asking for you to remix the originals with new sounds and studio trickery, but if you understand anything about audio recording, improvement of a mastered mix is so limited it's almost not worth it, unless some giant mistake was made in the original master.

They tout that they were remaster in 24 bit, etc. Big whoop they are still delivered on CD, 16 bit.

If I take a picture of the Mona Lisa with a 21 megapixel camera and 8 megapixel camera and give you a 4 megapixel copy to look at... Who cares which one camera it was taken with.
Delivery is the deciding factor.

Maybe when they deliver the digital versions with the 24bit (I have no idea why they are going to be in 44khz) then you'll be able to really here some difference, but right now all you are hearing in those cds is more compression, more limiting (a form of compression) = loudness. That is it.

To my ears the new remasters sound overly compressed. There is nothing revelatory, NOTHING.

The supporters are just people who love the music so much (I do too) that they are blinded by the fact they were just conned into paying for their love again.

Wake up. YOU CANNOT redefine the low end to a mastered mix without adding bass to everything.
Anything done to the mix is done to everything in the mix.

“Otherwise, you might want to spring for a copy of the Yellow Submarine CD released in 1999 that just had the Beatles songs used in the movie, although they likely won’t sound as good as the remastered versions coming out now”

This comment goes to show how little some of these reviewers know, or how trained their ears are.<br

To imply that such great tracks as "No Reply", "The Night Before", "You're Going to Lose That Girl", "Hello Goodbye" et al are second-rate Beatles fare seems ridiculous to a true fan. And to ignore the mono versions of Please Please Me, With The Beatles and A Hard Day's Night..well, it ain't right, to put it mildly. A serious reviewer would cough up the $200 and inform readers that THE BEATLES IN MONO is essential, not merely a luxury. If one fails to find significance in owning the entire remastered catalog, then how does one presume to second-guess Ringo's use of his hi-hat?
My advice: Keep yer day jobs..

Nice enough reviews, but the authors obviously weren't there back in the day.
