Radio ad for CD of music from the Blue Man Group show I heard maybe 10 years ago (at least look at bluemangroup.com if you have no idea who they are). Some details lost to memory, but the below is true in its essentials. Still cracks me up when I thing of it.

Announcer: Is the Blue Man Group CD better than the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"?

BMG Member: No!

Announcer: Is it better than the Who's "Who's Next"?

BMG: No!

Announcer: What about "Tiffany's Greatest Hits"?

BMG: Yes.

Announcer: Is it better than Journey's "Escape"?

BMG: Is that the one with "Who's Crying Now" on it?

Announcer: Yes.

BMG: ...
I just got around to listening to #7. I have to say, I like it far better as a solo vocal. The duet doesn't make near as much sense when both sides are singing about how confused they are about the flaky behavior of one of them.

"Celebration" always takes me back to Homecoming '81, my freshman year, when I was suddenly thrust into a world of pink tissue paper & chicken wire, and people mistakenly telling me that the new latest & greatest rocker (Bryan Adams) was a local boy made good. (He is not from this country, much less suburban Chicago.) And there was Kool all the time: it's time to come together. It's up to me, what's my pleasure.

With regard to "Endless Love," don't forget the movie, with its movie poster that hung around the periphery of our nightmares. http://tinyurl.com/6g3c35 Has anyone actually seen this movie? Who the hell is Martin Hewitt, anyway?

I admit I really like Eddie Rabbitt. His hits notwithstanding, which weren't really very offensive in the grand scheme of things, he did a song about his Irish father and his family roots that used to make me feel like crying. My parents had the album on vinyl. I should look for it.

*sigh* 1981.

Not everyone liked Dan Fogelberg like not everyone cared about Pope John Paul II or Ronald Reagan. But he was still a great singer songwriter maybe not as good as the Eagles who cared about him.

LOVE IT! Great to read about this time in music and these hits. I was 35, going through a divorce, and moving out of my first house in October, 1981, so several of these songs (look at them, think about them) didn't sit too pretty with me at the time, but these classics were leading us into what some of us consider the greatest year ever in rock music - 1982. Of the songs charted this week, I really only liked a couple of them at the time and changed the channel for the others, but I love `em (most of them) now! Back then, I thought the chartmakers had lost their minds to allow "Arthur's Theme" to be #1 in the country, and I sure as heck didn't want to hear Dan Fogelberg singing "It's hard to say where love went wrong." Within the next few years, Dan became my favorite artist of all time. I'm in my sixties now, and it's nice to be able to grocery shop or get on an elevator and know I'll hear Dan. Thanks, Jason, for this entry, and Robert, keep up the interesting Chart Attacks!

Where to begin ? Stevie & Tom were one of the best duet teams of the 80's. Normally stars of their gargantatude end up doing terrible collabs but this one is hot. Those identically-dressed backup vocalists were probably Sharon & Lori in their dresses made from incense and raffia.

Private Eyes totally rocks and sadly the video does not. But Hall & Oates (well, at least Hall) were at their zenith and could do little wrong. I found Maneater to be almost as difficult to understand as PE. It turns out Maneater wasn't as dirty as I originally thought. Bummer.

People either hate Endless Love or they really hate it. Me, I love it and feel Endless Shame about it. Thanfully it helped kick off Lionel's solo career that would feature even more delightful love droppings. Who wants stew ?

Well, I hated Christopher Cross and still find his hairline terrifying. But I adore Arthur's Theme from that movie where the funny alcoholic almost gets his ping-pong washed by his gay butler. And Liza (with a Zzzzzz) plays a poor waitress with a $200 haircut. Apparantly if you get caught between the moon and New York City, you'll find a Supercuts.

Also, thanks for the shoutout to my now world-famous Sheena Easton tribute.

"My love, there's only you in my life . . . "

All these people bragging about how they were 11 in 1981. Well, you little whippersnappers, I was 20. Yes, 20 goddammit! I was just ONE YEAR AWAY from becoming the subject of "The Night Owls". While you little punks were taping songs off the radio with your cheap-ass cassette recorders, I was in college going to toga parties, getting rejected by girls, and wondering why the cafeteria chef put half an apple in the gravy ("It's a garnish" was the explanation).

Now, I wouldn't say that just because I'm old that I only appreciate the mellower songs on this chart. Nay! Endless Love and Arthur's Theme both suck dog bathwater, but I do love that Fogelberg track. But then I was a big Fogelhead right up to "The Innocent Age". Danny seemed to lose something after that, like it was just too big a project and it took everything he had out of him. I think it's a brilliant album, but hardly anything he did after that was worth listening to (big exception - the country influenced "High Country Snows" which is his official last great album).

I just cain't argue with the rest of the chart write-up. It was really good, and like Jason, I also LOL. See, I can use hip young internet shortcut languages! I can be young if I want! Now excuse me while I go get some 'Just For Men'.
