I'm not sure, but I think "record of the year" is always a song, and albums are a different category. Not that any of us should put any faith in the traditional record industry model...

No, it definitely was off Thriller. I believe J.A. means that, in the grand scheme of Michael Jackson's recorded work, those two songs are the two that will stay while the rest get washed up in the gossip of history. I agree. "I'll Be there" really catches him at his best in his youth. "Billie Jean" was the point he became "The biggest pop star in the world" and everything after was a bit of a slide into the abyss.

I still like "Human Nature" best, though.

As the son of parents with "unique" music tastes (I know I'm not alone in this), I've heard most of these songs before, and on 45 rpm vinyl.

I always thought Jackson's Billie Jean was off of the Thriller album, unless I'm mistaken, or was there a separate Billie Jean album? Or, where it said "records" maybe it was intended to read "songs" in which case I've just wasted webspace.

Thanks for the chart attack.

What a great chart! I owned 9 out of these 10 songs on 45s or albums. (Sorry, R. Dean Taylor!)

That grammatical sin in "I'll Be There" always bothered me too.

Quick notes: Loose Translation is The Man!!

Neil Diamond singing "bitch" makes me strangely sad. Neil Diamond wagging his massive invisible schlong in that image makes me nauseous.

Sugarloaf? Isn't that slang for a diabetic's stool sample?

I'm just the kind of grammar-obsessed asshole who ALWAYS noticed the problem with "doesn't," even when I was six years old. I've come to understand it a bit better since having children -- my daughter (who's six now) just recently learned the proper declination of "to be." Before that, she was eternally saying that someone or other "beed mean to me today." (Of course, I never corrected her because it was too cute. So much for the grammar-obsessed asshole.)

The gunshots at the end of "Indiana Wants Me" really transform the song. I always thought that guy was kind of a pussy, obsessing over his need for someone "to talk to" as the Law closed in. Now it's clear he was ready to go out Butch Cassidy-style.

One more thing: I believe that bank commercial is actually the alternate ending to "The Graduate," in which Ben never shows up to stop the wedding and swing that cross around.
