Cover Me, Game One

(NOTE: Name That Tune will return next week at its usual time. ‘Til then, please enjoy this sneak peek at David Medsker’s Cover Me, a new feature that will be running Tuesdays at 9:30!)

Welcome to the inaugural installment of Cover Me. You good people seemed so enamored with Scraps’ wildly popular Name That Tune column that we decided to take it into the visual medium.

Below are magnified fragments of 25 album covers. Most of them are well-known albums, but there are a few obscure covers (or lesser-known albums from well-known artists) mixed in to keep you honest. You must guess both the artist and album cover. In order to keep things simple, live albums, soundtracks and singles compilations will not be used, and with all apologies to our European and Japanese friends, we are going with the covers that appeared in the US record stores…back when we had record stores. Sigh.

The rules are the same as Name That Tune. Each player can make three guesses between updates (“Update” is defined as “The time when I post a comment listing all of the covers that have been guessed correctly”), so everyone will have a chance to contribute. There is no puzzle cover this week, but that is subject to change in future installments, depending on how this one goes. In other words, you’re test subjects. Doncha feel special? All right, lab rats, ready, steady, go.

  • MokoLoco
I was enjoying this quiz. Right up until I realized I played it two weeks ago!

Take someone's idea and add your own spin to it? Sure. But if you are going to rip off the entire thing practically unchanged, you should have at least acknowledged the source.

This game is clearly based on The Word Magazine's quiz: http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/The+Very+...

And to reuse the same Roxy Music and Boomtown Rats artwork is even more audacious.
  • I happen to know he's had these quizzes lined up for many months. You're a crank.
  • MokoLoco
I don't mean to be troll-like, but I would like to defend my position. Word have been running these quizzes since April. See here: http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/top-crops...

And the Boomtown Rats thing? Am I really reaching when I question that coincidence?
  • Malchus
    You're reaching dude. Coincidence.
  • Coincidence. And if you don't believe me, I'm afraid that is your problem, not mine.

Not familiar with Word Magazine, but I will be sure to steer clear of them if it will prevent comments like this in the future. Cheers.
  • MokoLoco
Thanks for getting back to me, David. There are millions of album
covers in the world. Two of them show up in two very similar quizzes,
within weeks of each other. That is, at least, a noteworthy
coincidence. I should have simply pointed that out. Shame on me for
    jumping to negative conclusions.

And no need to avoid Word Magazine! Check it out. It's great.
  • I'm afraid to check them out now! Don't want to accidentally steal anything else from them.

As for Roxy and the Rats, all I can say is that they're a UK site, and I'm a UK pop fan (and a big fan of both of those bands in particular). Those were very distinct, iconic covers to me, so I used them. I hope you'll come back for Game Two (scheduled for August 12) with no hard feelings.
  • Thierry
    8. Kinks - The Kink Kontroversy
  • Kinks is correct. If the last three aren't guessed by noon EST, I'll post larger images of the covers
  • All right, here are the expanded versions of the final three covers.

    20: Lightning Seeds - Sense

Apparently, your tragically unappreciated NY band at 22 remains unappreciated. Sorry
  • Lightning Seeds is correct.

Come on, where's the love for a gay band, huh?
  • tangstrom
    #22 -- Scissor Sisters - Ta-Dah
  • Ah-beet, ah-beet, ah-beet, thanks all, folks! Scissor Sisters is correct.

Thanks for playing everyone, and we'll see you August 12, and every Tuesday after that.
  • Jerry
Again, just wanted to say what a fun game this was. Great variety of albums, too. Looking forward to Game 2!
  • I can't believe I didn't recognize The Kink Kontroversy.
