Like "Power Over me" (also from that 3rd album), those songs were very haunting and spellbinding in their music particulary but really they had changed quite significantly as a band if you were to compare it to this debut album (which was only 3 years before).
I like this debut. Always have since i got it several years ago. It's a fun album and though it sounds pretty mechanical at times, it's got good musical qualities to nearly every song, especially guitar playing being scorching (as i always say, I don't give a crap if they are some LA session musicians.. when it rocks. I care about if something is good). I agree, a few of the lyrics were a bit silly as were those dorky moments (code of Love perhaps and don't even mention Life Goes On) but still this is overall a fun album with most tracks being with nice emphasis of melody and it's even a good party music in 2010. You can still play a lot of songs on this album today and they go down so I can forgive the few very dated or bad moments it may have. If you have not heard this album but are familar with "Welcome to The Real World" (or "Go On" for that matter), you might be a bit surprized at how it is. Very upbeat and new wave poppy. Though the guitar playing is really very smoking, there is actually not really much of the slightly harder edge that was found sometimes in the actual songwriting on welcome or go on, or at least when it does appear (Talk the Talk for example) it is of a different breed. It's almost more alt pop rock style as opposed to hard arena rocking, if that makes any sense. I like it. This album is lighter and poppier and well, it just always surprized me in finding it was so decent because though I liked Go on a lot i never took to the middle album as much, therefore passing on this until several years back

Yeh I like Dust & The Border. Sing your biggest song with your hands in your pockets like you're waiting for a bus.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJU-O8uiRYk

You have your biggest album. Take away the lyrics to XTC's "Dear God," for example, and melodically and harmonically it isn't so much better, if at all, than Richard Page's writing.

Don't believe me? Try playing "Dear God," focusing only on melodies and arrangements and ignoring what the words mean, then play a 3rd Matinee song like "Family Tree" or "Meanwhile". Not only is the XTC song - or any XTC song for that matter - not the slightest bit more beautiful or memorable melodically, the quality of the playing and singing is hugely INFERIOR to Page and company's.

I also would rather listen to the MIsters than XTC. Simply cuz I don't care about the quality of lyrics at all (unless theyre Justin Timberlake "I'm bringing sexy back" bad - I have to draw the line somewhere). I dont care if songs like "runaway" or "let you drive" have idiotic lyrics... block that out, and just focus on the melodies and arrangements, and the songs are decent enough.

And just to play devil's advocate still further, the real comparison would not be with a band like XTC. A more fair comparison would be to quite acclaimed, critically respected mainstream 80s pop like Prince, Michael Jackson (before he turned into a freak), Depeche Mode, New Order, or even Madonna. Of course Mr Mr's music sounds dated, because it uses a lot of synths. But does it sound any more dated than these other acts which are synthesizer top-heavy? Not to my ears. Have you tried listening to anything by Prince, or early Madonna, or DM's "I just can't get enough" lately? The songs are catchy, but the synth/drum machine-overloaded arrangements make them sound dated and trapped in their era. Much more so, IMO, than the Mr.s. So why do they get a free pass from music reviewers but the Mr's don't? At least Page (unlike Madonna, M.J., or Bernard Sumner) actually has a great voice.

Why are shitty lyrics held up as such a crime? Probably the same reason I know who Johnny Hates Jazz are. The funny thing is that he didn't even fire the first shot. Someone else did, with the following quote:

"I never knew Pat Mastelotto was with (XTC) though! He played with Mr. Mister, the Rembrandts and King Crimson. What was he doing slumming with these guys?"

It was that connection that inspired Kurt's staunch defense of Mr. Mister in the first place.
