Ganz is one of those actors who makes it look easy, but he found Damiel a very difficult role to pull off–too passive. But his eyes, and the way he sets his face, speak volumes. He's excellent in Wenders' AMERICAN FRIEND, with Dennis Hopper. That is on Region 1 DVD.

One of my all time favorites, for sure. Bruno Ganz comes across very angelic. So angelic in fact, that I had a hard time disliking him as Hitler in Downfall. Thank God for all those parodies…it made it easier to ignore that fact!

Now that it's got the Criterion treatment, I'll have to pick up a new copy.

Yes, Shepard. They reteamed for DON'T COME KNOCKING a few years back. While beautiful, I just found it slow and sort of vacant, though others in my dorm disagreed. Maybe I'll reconsider that one, too.

Funny; I think PARIS, TEXAS is probably his most accessible movie, not coincidentally because it's got such a strong script (by Sam Shepherd, if I'm not mistaken?)

In any case, it's hugely influential, even on people who've never seen it: when was the last time you saw a desert vista in the movies that wasn't accompanied by a rattly slide guitar?

Ry Cooder is so great, he even makes “Last Man Standing” almost watchable. Almost.

Outside of the documentary BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, this was Wenders' last commercial hit. His other more broadly succesful film, PARIS, TEXAS, is getting the Criterion treatment in January. (That movie I really found distancing, except for the exquisite Ry Cooder soundtrack.) Of his more recent, hard-to-see movies, LAND OF PLENTY is at least interesting…and I have a soft spot for his notorious 1982 flop HAMMETT.

It's gratifying to see so much affection for WINGS. I'm getting it. If only ALICE IN THE CITIES and some of his earlier German films were easier to find.

I love this movie, but it took me three attempts to even make it through it. It is a movie that seers it's images into your mind (like when I think of the Grayson's from Batman I see this trapeze in my head) and regardless of what you “think” about it you can't forget it. Probably why I kept giving it a chance. I saw Until the End of the World (would kill for a DVD or even better Bluray of that) first because of it's amazing soundtrack, but I think this is my favorite movie by him.
