The middle book is the movie I'd have liked to have seen: Billy Phelan's Greatest Game could have been a Depression-era Nobody's Fool, and would have made a good picture. Kennedy's Albany Trilogy is an admirable literary work, and the most literary of the three books is Ironweed, which made it an odd choice to film. As you say, “Legs” could have worked– gangster stuff has a well-worn template.
