I thought ZODIAC was one of the finest films of its year and was eager to see Pitt and Fincher working together again. However, the film just didn't connect emotionally. All of the elements were there for it to be a great movie, but everything just kind of fell flat. I know many people who loved this film and cried throughout it. I just couldn't get past the feeling that I'd seen this story before. I happened to attend a screening of the film that held a question and answer hour with Fincher and the screenwriter, Eric Roth. When an audience member asked Roth how he thought people would react when they saw the similarities between this movie and FORREST GUMP, Roth claimed that he did not think there were any similarities. Not only did this raise a few eyebrows, but it made many people look back over the movie and draw the comparisons. I know I did.

I wanted to like this film much more than I did. (That was dark enough, thank you, and I was glad the film pushed through it, cutting off an excess of catharsis.) And I saw a misframed print, at that. I relate to its appreciation of the impermanence of things--something you really don't begin to feel in your bones till you're 40. But perhaps 165 minutes is a little too permanent.

Criterion has handled far worse movies, and had a love affair with Michael Bay for a while there. But Fincher really opened up the shop to them, and I'm sure that as Jeff noted the generous extras inform the film.

I guess I'm the only BUTTON pusher here. Going to the-editing-room.com and reading Rod Hilton's version of the film made me feel much, much better. :-)

Button blew, that much I felt to the deepest core of my soul when I finished watching this overrated tripe!
