This makes no sense, given that you just said you didn't follow along and that you haven't heard his more recent work. You can't compare and arrive at "best" if you have no reference point.

It would be much more accurate to say that you just chose to stop listening when you thought he was ahead.

Thanks for spotlighting “Hoover Dam”, my favorite Bob Mould/Sugar track.

The Beaster EP is difficult to listen to. Even though it's not a full album, it seems to take forever to get through. I'm not sure what the Catholic church did to piss Bob off so badly, but he's certainly angry with Christianity in general. One or two songs about it wouldn't be so bad, but to have to sit through song after song after song on the same sour subject is just too much to take. And the EP artwork is pretty sick too.

His post-Sugar work doesn't seem to have the same spark, and is pretty inconsistent, but is worth owning – with the major exception of “Modulate”. I played it once, and will only keep it as I am a completist. The new album is his best since the last Sugar album.

I stuck with Mould through the self-titled solo album, but it's seemed like a case of diminishing returns since then.

His work with Husker Du is beyond reproach, of course, but Sugar would be a career highlight for a lesser artist. Copper Blue remains my favourite of theirs: “If I Can't Change Your Mind,” “Slick,” “A Good Idea”â€¦all great tunes.

Here in the New York-Tri-State area, even our college stations avoided Sugar. I tried several attempts to request at one point but I can't remember a single time hearing the band on the radio. I'm glad the album had some traction though, from what you said, but it makes it worse that they couldn't maintain the momentum.

I don't know that I'd agree with your assessment that Sugar's Copper Blue was was lost, i.e. underappreciated by the masses in its time. It came close to going gold and scored a top 5 Modern Rock hit with “Changes,” and our local adult alternative station used to play the living hell out of “If I Can't Change Your Mind.”
