I found I was taking my wife's with me on trips and to rehearsal. And after checking and seeing that she had only used 9 minutes last month I figured we'd always have plenty of minutes (her phone is only for emergencies too).

So far the only people that have my number are my wife and the band members (Note to self - Give number to grown son!). I plan on keeping it that way!

I think so far the only time I called my wife was when I didn't know what kind of tub of margarine to buy at the store since they were out of what was on the grocery list. Nice and simple!

Oh, BTW - HANG UP AND DRIVE!! DAMMIT!

I finally broke down and succumbed to cell phone fever about a month ago. I figure most of my friends have had one since around 1999 (and still have a land line) and have paid about $45 a month since then. That's about $4200 they've spent on a cellphone bill that I've used for cool vacations and such. Although, admittedly, there have been a few times where I wish I had one when meeting up with folks in public. But these are few enough in number that they dont warrant the money.

But like you DW., I admit I'll probably cave in eventually......

I'm a holdout too. I find it's much simpler to avoid having friends altogether. Alienating people is easier than you think!

A lot of people stand by the idea of not giving out your cellphone number except to a select group of friends. About eight people -- none of them coworkers -- have the number, and everyone knows that I leave it off most of the time, and have it on vibrate in my bag almost all of the rest of the time. It's for one purpose only: "I'm running late/the trains are screwed up/I'm at the corner of 12th Street and Vine -- where are you?"

I am such a bitch about cell phones that my friends apologize when they have to take calls around me -- or they don't hang out with me. I've actually stopped going out with people who take calls while we're having allegedly one-on-one get-togethers.

But I'm a cranky bitch, anyway. Like you, I feel that my time is my own, and the world can function without me being available 24/7.

I have a cell phone. Number of emergencies since I've had it in the last five years? Zero.

When I'm asked "What if someone needs to get a hold of you" I say 'What did people do ten years ago?".

The problem is there are people that are young enough not to know what folks did ten years ago and my lack of concern is an inconvienence to them. I get odd looks when I tell them it's their problem not mine.

I have a cell phone. It's never on. I have it for emergencies. I have been avoiding ( and keeping my cell number hidden ) for ages. It's one thing to call the spouse and see if anythging is needed from the market or to say that a good friend or family member has just passed away, but the three hour conversation concerning the right kind of wallpaper paste to use is absurd. I'm just glad that I am not alone in my love of the telegraph, Morse code, and smoke signals! Thanks again for a good rant.

LMS

Thank you for a breath of fresh air.
