Still have the 45 somewhere.

I was only 8 when this song was a hit in late '72-early '73, but even back then I knew this song came from way out in left field (compared to everything else on the radio at the time). (He's right, of course.)

I love this song, and did even before the Beatle connection and despite the reviewer who compared the sax to a goose being tortured with hot spikes. I haven't heard this song since my father bought it for a similar stereo that was purchased from Sears in the late 60s -- and wasn't replaced until 1982 with a Pioneer rack mounted thing with turntable, cassette, AM/FM tuner and speakers that sounded pretty good for the time. Alas, the 45 by Smith was probably thrown out to make way for my dad's growing collection of cassettes.

Thanks for the memories Dw! :-)

Good lord! Ringo might have been able to sing it in a lower key.

I had totally forgotten this song, and I think I appreciate it more now than I could have as a kid. What a nice blast from the past.

Johnny, you beat me to the punch, because I was going to say that this sounds like something McCartney could have written in one of his more whimsical moods. Lots of bands, like the Sensational Alex Harvey band a year later with "Sgt. Fury", seemed to love doing those 20's-30's pastiches.

Me, I loved this song the first time I heard it on an AM radio station back in 1972 at age 12. I had no clue that it was Norman Beatle Engineer Smith, but I'm sure I would have been blown away by the revelation, as I certainly was when I found out years later...

I've always thought that this song was just an attempt to do something in the vein of hits like “Winchester Cathedral”, the Kinks' ongoing music-hall infatuation, and Paul McCartney's “When I'm 64″ and “Honey Pie”.
