Aaron Neville’s unmistakable voice comes in as a counterpoint on a spacey, album-closing version of “Amazing Grace,” brimming with stately melancholy; but he sounds a celebratory note, as well, on “The Maker” (download), which turns a New Orleans groove inside out and reassembles it into a plaintive modern hymn. And maybe it was before stars started getting Ocsar nominations for playing disabled people on screen.

You would think that pitching a film with a disabled lead character would be a tough sell in Hollywood. All the good U2 albums (I don't care what everyone else says, I still like Unforgettable Fire), Peter Gabriel, Michael Brook (I wonder if he produced the song Ultramarine that was used in Heat)...even Dylan's Time Out of Mind. Actually, it's pretty rude to have skipped past all that stuff, but I'm glad I did - I would have been up all night writing about him. Let's just say that The Maker is a great song, perfect for the end of the film.

I probably should have…he's got one hell of a list of production credits. On the scifi side, Lawmover Man and Charly (Flowers for Algernon) came to mind.

Is it me or is Lanois a critically underrated artist?<br
