But I downloaded it three different times and it was always the same one, so there you have it.

Yeah, it's pretty weak. Clearly there was sensitivity involved -- the Farrellys just weren't interested in being "safe" with their jokes.

I've only seen parts of "Stuck on You," and I haven't seen "The Ringer," which was produced by the Farrellys, so I'm not sure how sensitive those films are, but I do know that in the parts of "Stuck on You" that I've seen, the mentally challenged actors can't act, which makes them stick out even more. It's one thing to be sensitive, it's another to let the audience's focus drift to things it shouldn't be focusing on. The Farrellys also seem to have a bad habit of casting their friends or people they know from Rhode Island in small roles, and these people can't act either. It's distracting.

Ben Stiller said in an interview that when "Mary" started shooting he couldn't believe that the Farrellys had so many of their friends on the set all the time and that they'd laugh so hard after every take. He thought they were deluding themselves and not taking the job seriously enough. But then when he saw the final cut he realized their work-should-be-fun method was effective. But judging by the reviews and grosses of their last three films, that method probably isn't working so well anymore.

I remember that "Mary" was a real sleeper hit in that it didn't debut at #1 when it came out but instead hung around the top 5 at the box office for a while and then in early September finally became #1. Like you said last week, the trailer wasn't anything special, but when I saw the movie I laughed the entire time. And the soundtrack was pretty great too. I like the Farrellys' taste in music in general.

The Farrellys softened the blow of their “retard” jokes in “Mary” by casting mentally challenged people in some of the smaller roles, but it wasn't like that was a smoke screen so they could then make lots of mean jokes about retarded people. We wrote the jizz joke." But take note, movie fans, this happens all the time when you get too comfortable with your own methods. Last year was the year of the Apatow Gang. Two years from now he may be saying, "I'm the one who did the Old Virgin movie!"

Ugh.

I liked this movie just like everyone else did but, man, like a pesky ivy it has strands wrapped everywhere around everything – Ben Stiller who has made a career of playing reiterations of this same character, Cameron Diaz who has lately been more famous for riding Timberlake's… uh… riding Timberlake, and the sad neediness of the Farrelly Bros. who constantly have to ignore their previous movie(s) and remind everyone, “We did the Mary movie!”

It is worst for the Farrellys in that they went from being the presumed kings of the Hollywood comedy to near where-are-they-now status, at least until they say “Oh yeah, we also did the Mary movie.
