While I believe this event actually occurred, I also believe the forces at work robbed us of many more years of Withers' music. It's easy to imagine boardroom shenanigans after the death of Marvin Gaye, and frazzled members wondering who they were going to groom to replace him (which is kind of the feeling I'm getting for what/why it happened.) I don't know how anyone could possibly ask Withers to alter his approach to fit in with new trends.
