I enjoyed the show and had seen its magic with the kids. There were kids in the theater and they were clapping and giggling so joyfully that it somehow made me very happy too.

3-D asides, the movie Up was definitely worthed the bucks watching it at the theater. Even films that came before are being revamped with the process, as upcoming re-releases of the Toy Story and Shrek flicks are slated to be redimensionalized for your 2009 holiday wallet gouging season.

As with most things, I blame Miley Cyrus. Although not an animated movie, the Best Of Both Worlds concert movie triggered a thought in the Hollywood collective that the best way to capture the fleeting attention spans of Twitter-addicted tweens is to have the screen throw stuff at them. Thus far, they've haven't been proved completely wrong (even if the Jonas Bros. 3D flick made serious skidmarks) so the onward march continues.

What gets me is that there are still the occasional animated films that get by purely on the beauty of the animation, yet are going to get suited up with this newfangled gear nonetheless, and the inherent distractions and distortions actually ruin the image quality. If you worked on a film for 3 or more years, finessing every detail along the way, only to have those details washed out by the flighty eccentricities of the 3D viewing experience, you'd probably not be too happy about it.

The studios have suddenly got the notion that all animated movies should be in 3D. Just look at the parade of coming attractions before Up, all for 3D cartoons. Disney probably felt that unless Up was in 3D it would not be as commercially successful. Having seen it in 3D, I totally agree the process was not necessary (and I say that as someone who LOVED the 3D in "Coraline" and "Monsters vs. Aliens"). In fact, I'm thinking of going back to see it in regular 2D (my local theater is offering both) so I can better enjoy the splendid animation.

My opinion is that the only reason Up is in 3D is because lately, it seems like every animated movie *has* to be in 3D. Most of the critics I've read have wondered why such a vivid and eye-popping film would dull all of that with the better, but still not perfect, 3-D separation process.

You're not the only one to have issues with the 3-D.
