Great post. I wish GM had kept his nose clean over the year - maybe someone else would focus on his music instead. I don't think he's ever released a bad album - Songs from the Last Century didn't do much for me but that's more about me not liking the songs, rather than George. Faith is a wonderful album, but I think Listen Without Predjudice Vol. 1 is his best album by far. And you can't beat "2 Funky" off the Red Hot & ...something record - Blue? Dance?

I was able to listen to the Boogie Box High record (George's Cousin) with George doing a cover of the Bee Gees "Jive Talkin'" - ever heard that one?

Thanks for the comments, kids. I think there are some great songs on these albums and I hope people who have skipped these releases because of bad word of mouth will decide to check them out. There's something worthy on all of them. That's the whole purpose of this column.

If he's had a stellar career, there's no need to feel guilty. We like what we like, and if other people say it isn't hip, fuck 'em. (I mean this in the best way possible. I'm not trying to start an argument here. I'm just saying there's no shame in liking George Michael.)

I just mentioned George Michael among my Top 10 Guilty Pleasures. “Listen w/o Prejudice” is almost perfect, and “Praying for Time” ranks up there as one of my all-time favorites.

He's had a stellar career and shouldn't be remembered for one bathroom incident.

George's show is absolutely worth any required effort and expenditure. He's in excellent voice, he seems thrilled to be before the public again, and his songs are still some of the most vibrant, irresistible pop of the last 25 years. The high points go as far back as “Everything She Wants” and “I'm Your Man,” as close to the present as “Amazing” and “The First Time…”

It's a brilliant show–and if you're a fan of the “Older” album, it's well represented. (The only disappointment for me was that he didn't go deep enough into “Listen Without Prejudice”–”Waiting for That Day” is one of my favorites.) At his best, George couldn't be topped as a pop songwriter; on this tour, he's acting like he knows it, and the audience seems to as well.

I'm tempted to see George in Boston at the end of this month. Despite the fact that I think “Patience” was a pretty crappy album, he's made more than enough outstanding material that I'm sure I'll enjoy the show. I'm glad to see there are others out there who think “Listen Without Prejudice” and “Older” are unjustly maligned. They are both excellent albums.

Nice recap! I tell ya, I just saw George in Phoenix a few weeks ago, and I'm still coming down from it. Go see him when he comes to your town (if he hasn't already). Still amazing after all these years….
