It's actually pretty easy to point out why, despite possessing tons (NPI) of talent, the Weather Girls never truly broke out of "cult" status. First was obviously the disco backlash of the early Eighties (and some serious anti-gay sentiment that popped up around the discovery of AIDS). Their association with Sylvester (who had his own issues crossing over after the initial success of "Dance (Disco Heat)" and "(You Make Me Feel) Mighty Real") certainly didn't help matters. Second, their one actual hit, "It's Raining Men" was, at best, a novelty song (plus, despite the fact that they sing the shit out of it, the song kinda sucks). Third, well, they were big girls. Even in an era that was welcoming to plus-sized R&B acts like Cheryl Lynn and Phyllis Hyman, it was extraordinarily rare to turn on "Solid Gold" or MTV and see artists who were substantially overweight. I'm glad that Martha Wash (whose voice is a force of nature) still manages to get consistent work these days and that she's not (completely) bitter despite the phenomenally fucked up treatment she got from the music biz.
