Of course Atoosa didn't deserve what she got. No one does. That's life. But anybody who puts their creative endeavors out for the world to see - and that includes Atoosa, with her music, and you, with your PR efforts - has got to be prepared for criticism of those endeavors. It doesn't matter if you're a pop star, an indie artist, or subway busker.

Should critics only say nice things about independent artists? What an odd notion. Has that been your previous experience? If so, I would suggest that you have been, perhaps without even realizing it, operating in a bubble. Are indie artists such delicate flowers that they will wither and die in the face of a single negative review?

A serious question: Why the hell are you wasting your time explaining yourself to the likes of me? Who the hell am I, and what do I matter in the grand scheme of Atoosa's art and your career? The only explanation I can come up with is that this is the first negative press treatment Atoosa has ever gotten.

Is that so? Because I'm going to make a prediction here: it won't be the last. No matter how good she is, it won't be the last bad press she gets. That's how it works. Nobody gets a free ride. And if you try to respond to each bad review, to set the record straight every time, you're only gonna make yourself crazy.

Let it go. Not everybody is going to dig what you're doing. You're not going to be able to win everybody over, no matter how nicely you point out that lots of other people liked it and thought it was funny and clever. I mean, that's great and all, but I'm not one of those other people. It didn't work for me. You lost this one. Suck it up, move on, and do better next time.

You're welcome.

Hi,

I wanted to write in about the above piece you wrote. I am the publicist that is working with Atoosa. We 100% stand by that email that we wrote. In fact, we received a significant amount of great feedback from journalists who actually loved the email and thought it was different and clever. I am sorry if you took it the wrong way and thought it was appropriate to tear it and my client apart.

On that note, you actually did get the wrong bio. Clearly that was a mistake made my someone in our office. Guess what, mistakes happen, we are human. That was actually an older bio that has not been used in our office since we started working with Atoosa. I would offer to send you the correct version but for some reason I am gonna pass on that. I also have to say, this is an indie artist - not someone trying to be a popstar (as you say in your article) and she didn't deserve this. In my opinion your judgments seem too harsh for independent artists.

One other thing, as much as you disagree with our pitch, etc., you did in fact read the email and you did in fact put the record on. So I guess in the long run, it worked.

This is one of the greatest columns I've read breaking down the inanity of bad indie music relationships and NYC scenesters in general. I think the great capture is her empty web page; whenever I look at an indie artists website and nothing is in it? Well either they are lazy or just have no professional acumen.

Haven't heard of this artist, her record, her movement or her management but I hate them already.

BTW this isn't a music review column; its more of a review of how to NOT sell your music/record to an Internet age where it will get lost.

I have now read this three times and I can't help cracking up. My problem is, the first time I read it, I got the part where you were pointing out her press release sounded like a resume and just continued ripping her another new one.

And it popped in my head. Remember what was said in Blazing Saddles after Harvey Korman shot the cowboy because the cowboy was chewing gum while in line?

"Boy, is he strict."

Sorry, I cracked myself up. And every time I read this, I see Wilder and Little poking their heads from around that boulder.

Carry on . . . .

You obviously have no talent for reviewing music.

Then it's a good thing that this isn't a music review column, isn't it?

And also, to be fair, it sounds like she's out having a life. Think her site said she just had a kid?

I do think the press quality sucks, though. It should do more to emphasize a few strengths (in fewer words, please!) and less to show the holes in her "employment status" as it were. Her bio reads like this horrible full-page cover letter we got at work this week. Too much info, not enough substance.
