It is obvious that the author of this text doesn't get it. The author doesn't understand that to really understand an artist - Barbara or any other artist - one has to interpret the practitioner. In other words, one doesn't just listen -- one must WATCH THE WAY THE ARTIST interprets the songs. And you can't tell me when Barbara St. sings - IT's A Lazy Afternoon --- and really watches the way she extrapolates the words - with such grand and glorious pausing - one isn't impressed. In short, Barbara and her music must be DUG. The author didn't DIG IT -- BECAUSE HE WAS OBVIOUSLY BIAS AGAINST BARBARA BEFORE HE EVEN STARTED HIS SELF-centered comments. He as much said this in his piece. What every happened by blank-slating-it and putting it in neutral so the critic's opinion has some honesty and innocency to it. You certainly do not see it here.

Given her solemnity these days, I was surprised to see her loosened up in Meet the Fockers. Though she and Dustin Hoffman co-ran the First Artists production company in the 70s it's impossible to imagine them sharing the same soundstage back then, when they were both huge--and hugely self-important. (Hoffman seems so much happier these days, with the weight of mega-stardom and expectations off his back.)

As you wrote, gay culture has always informed the culture-at-large. The movies have been infused with a queer sensibility since forever. And we've lived with it quite happily.

Middle America accepted gay culture decades ago. How do you think "Top Gun" sold so many tickets? Duh.
