That Django track is just...weird.

It's amazing to me that someone in 1968 would sit there and put something like that together.

Also, the lead guitar doesn't sound like Django. I didn't think there were a lot of recordings of Django playing electric, and the phrasing just sounds odd to my ear. I'd love to hear the original.

You know, I really donâ€™t want to speculate on John Carter Cashâ€™s motives here. It might have been a cash grab, yeah â€“ or it might have seemed a logical extension of Johnny Cashâ€™s own willingness to try off-the-wall things and extend the boundaries of his singular genre. Letâ€™s not forget, some of Johnnyâ€™s own projects sounded pretty unpromising in the abstract, from championing Kris Kristofferson in the 60s through working with Rick Rubin and singing songs by Will Oldham, Nick Cave, Glenn Danzig... Yes, on paper â€œSnoop Dogg remixes Johnny Cashâ€ looks like a terrible idea â€“ but so does â€œJohnny Cash sings Nine Inch Nails.â€

What I can say about John Carter Cash is that, whatever fine qualities he may have inherited from his father, taste does not seem to have been among them.

Also: maybe it's just me, but Johnny reciting thew New Testament with accompaniment by Moby actually sounds kinda awesome.

Yeah, Johnny's son co-executive produced this with Snoop. I think he may be illiterate, and just signed the contracts without knowing what they were for.

Jeff Giles posted the Snoop track last September (it's unavailable now), and I asked the question then that I'll ask now — who signed off on this shit? Did his son have anything to do with it? If he did … man oh man. Maybe next, we'll get to hear Johnny's recitation of the New Testament with accompaniment by Moby.
