I actually think he's already made his really good rock album in The Golden Age Of Grotesque – an album that doesn't get talked about too much but has some blistering rock songs on it and those fist pumping choruses that make him what he is.

I'm weird though because I'm one of the few people who seem to think that Eat Me, Drink Me is a decent album as well. When he came out and said that The High End of Low was going to be a return to rock music after the last record, I guess I was expecting a little more of the rock than this. It's not him at the top of his game, but I don't think it's a bad record either. Unfortunately, I think it's time for another cover song because he hasn't released anything that's going to bring in new fans, that's for sure.

He came halfway with Mechanical Animals, and the thought was that he'd finally break through, drop the shock schlock and deliver with the next one. Then he retreated to the schtick when the angry, sad kids mourned the loss of his parent-scaring capacity. “My dad thinks he could be the next Bowie now, for antichrist's sake!” opined one youngster. At this point, I think it's too late for him. He had an opportunity but chose to buff Jimmy Iovine's boots with his repentant tears instead.
