Once you've cracked this market, you're forever obliged to remain exactly as you were the moment you got in. That explains, to me at least, how Talk Talk could move toward something as elegant as their later albums and yet be almost completely disregarded Stateside. Had those 80s hits been as big as, say, No Doubt's cover version, they might have been forced to stay in that dance-pop mode forever.
