[...] Or maybe that’s all a bunch of crap, and what really happened was that a Memphis DJ/stand-up comic encountered a goofball at the gym who could do a good Donald Duck voice, and decided it would be funny to make a novelty record that capitalized on the disco craze. And the American people, whose taste in comedy should never be overestimated, sent “Disco Duck” to #1 in mid-October. My favorite part of the “Disco Duck” story is the fact that radio listeners in Memphis couldn’t hear it: Competing stations wouldn’t play it because they were loath to give Rick Dees any publicity, and his own station’s owners thought it would be a conflict of interest to give it any spins. Dees got fired just for mentioning the song on the air! He quickly got hired somewhere else, of course — and though he lost his most recent daily on-air gig this past spring, his “Weekly Top 40″ is still going in syndication. And “Disco Duck,” though we never hear it anymore, lives in infamy — and in the #3 slot on my list of the Worst #1 Songs of the ’70s. [...]

[...] 9. “Live and Let Die,” Wings. Why did Paul McCartney’s Bond theme fail to reach the pinnacle? Maybe because it’s mostly an instrumental? Nah… (Edgar Winter’s “Frankenstein” had topped the chart just a couple months earlier.) Perhaps because nobody cared much about its host film? As if! (Live and Let Die topped the box office through much of June and July 1973, and was the 10th-biggest film of the year.) Perchance were there simply better songs out at the time? Well, the three (three!) songs that leaped over Roger Moore’s speedboat were Maureen McGovern’s “The Morning After,” fresh off its Poseidon Adventure Oscar victory; Diana Ross’ diva anthem “Touch Me in the Morning”; and Stories’ cover of Hot Chocolate’s “Brother Louie.” So I’d argue, no, that wasn’t it either. (Here’s the original version of the last song, which far less obviously references the Kingsmen.) Personally, I’d like to think that radio still had Macca in the penalty box for turning out so much crap over the past two years, up to and including his previous single “My Love” – one of the Worst #1 Songs of the ’70s.
Oh, man...I really, REALLY can't stand "Crocodile Rock"...

..and for some reason, SO many people love the damn thing.

I'll forgive any questionable choices on this list, on the basis that you listed that assault on my ears.

Lets not forget the spate of 'revenge for the sake of a woman' songs Very dramatic and oh so laughable: 'I did What I Did For Maria ' and
Tell Laura I Love Her'. AND all those songs about dying: 'Sunshine'. 'Rocky', and that one about the missing dog: 'Shannon'. The worst one of ALL TIME though is an English ditty entitled: 'Grandad'. sung by actor Arthur Loewe. The early 70's (Bubblegum era) is often left out of the equation but in defence of the 70's, I believe it to be far superior overall to the faggy 80's!

Two things......

You neglected to mention that Wild Cherry won the "Best New Artist" Grammy for 'Play that Funky Music etc.' (Can you imagine the other nominees envy)?
Likewise, Starland Vocal Band the following year beat out some rather 'obscure' nominees to win that years "Best New Artist" Grammy.

The "Jerks On 45" single by The Circle Jerks has a great take on "Afternoon Delight" followed by a touching rendition of "D-I-V-O-R-C-E"

obey_gravity

Only #6? It was played to Death. Truly painful. But "Seasons in the Sun" was Worst.

I have the single for "Hooked on a Feeling." Sure, it's bad, but the kitsch factor made it for me back then.
