Amazingly the official Amazon entry describing Otis Redding's "Soul" album attributes the original "Scratch My Back" to Smokey Robinson!

I've got a "Giant Step/De Ole Folks at Home" two-fer that I love, and I think the "In Progress & In Motion" box that Sony put out awhile back is pretty amazingly solid, considering the breadth of material it draws from ("Fishin' Blues" is on the box, by the way).

If I had to guess, I'd say "Left Over Salmon" refers to the band Leftover Salmon.
I don't think Taj Mahal will ever record anything I like better than Fishin' Blues. He's recorded it several times, but I'm partial to a particular live recording. I haven't even been able to determine whether it is on any of his albums. The metadata tag on the MP3 says the album is "Left Over Salmon." After a quick search, I did not find such an album. OOP? Non-existent? Maybe some of you musical obsessives can help me.

So Jeff, which *is* the first album you pull out when you feel the urge for some Taj Mahal listening?

Eric the Resolutely Religulous Conservative

The NY Times may have called him that, but I've heard him say the following in interviews himself:

"My name is Meatloaf. Some people call me Meat. Some people call me Mr. Loaf."

"Scratch My Back" as far as I know was/is Slim Harpo's tune. However Booker T. and the Mgs have an incredibly funky version. In fact Al Jackson Jr. could be the funkiest man to have ever lived if that version is any evidence.

Yep, same here. And if the New York Times can call Meat Loaf "Mr. Loaf," then we can use Mr. Mahal!

Mr.. Mahal? Really? I suppose so, but it struck me as funny.

I think this album is too slick for my taste. I understand what he's going for, and I hope he gets his well-deserved hit, but it's not for me. Yes, I am one of those people who pulls out "Giant Step" all the time.
