Ellie Goulding is quite popular but didnt we just have La Roux???
The Electropop/Synthpop i think tipped this past year, and I believe is on the way out.

"The" the bands are also on the way out (if not already gone).

Great Lakes Myth Society was alright, but nothing major.
Music in general is changing so much, but I miss the epic radio friendly rock music (and no not talking about Nickelback). The indie stuff is becoming too saturated and too much derivative of itself.

GLMS are in the studio at the moment, so a new album isn't far away. The XTC analogy is spot-on: their eponymous 2005 album is basically the American 'Skylarking'.

There's also two albums by their precursor band, 'The Original Brothers And Sisters Of Love', from 1999 and 2001 that are well worth checking out. They've been doing the Americana / Folk thing long before the Sufjan Steven's and Decemberists drew attention for much the same thing.

Timothy Monger also released an excellent solo album, 'Summer Cherry Ghosts', in 2004, that's Nick Drake-style Chamber Pop.
